DEQUINCY — The DeQuincy opened district on Friday with a 31-29 win over Oakdale at home.

Oakdale took a 29-25 lead on a 5-yard run by George Melbert with 1:36 left in the game, but the Tigers needed just 36 seconds to respond. Gunner Gearen hit Braylon Snell on a 24-yard pass for the go-ahead score. Gearen threw three touchdown passes and rushed for two more while completing 24 of 31 passes for 276 yards. Snell caught five passes for 71 yards, Taije Ceasar caught seven for 113 and Cooper Hext made eight catches for 97 yards.

DeQuincy led 19-9 at halftime, but Oakdale’s Keyon Pugh scored on runs of 89 and 35 yards in the third quarter to put the Warriors up 23-19. Pugh ran for 262 yards on 29 carries.

DeQuincy (3-3, 1-0) will host Pickering (3-3, 0-1) on Friday while Oakdale (3-2, 0-1) will host Kinder (2-4, 1-0).

Vinton 42, Pickering 20

PICKERING — Vinton’s Jordan Janice and Drew Heinen eclipsed the 100-yard mark and Hezakiah Holts scored three times to lead the Lions to 22 second-half points and a 42-20 district opening win over Pickering Friday on the road.

Pickering tied the game at 14-14 in the second quarter after a 1-yard run by Red Devil quarterback Braden LeBato, but Holts ripped off a 38-yard run to put the Lions up 20-14. Holts scored his third touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 73 yards on eight carries. Janice picked up 153 yards on 18 carries and Heinen added 100 yards on 10 carries.

Heinen (8-17-0, 140 yards) threw two touchdown passes for Logan Beard (3 rec., 41 yards). Jade Carries made three catches for 57 yards.

LeBato scored two and rushed for 69 yards on 10 carries but was picked off three times. 

Vinton (3-2, 1-0) will travel to Rosepine (2-4, 0-1) on Friday while Pickering (3-3, 0-1) will travel to DeQuincy (3-3, 1-0).
