MOSS BLUFF — Seniors Kyle Bartley and Tavyen Grice had career nights Friday to lead Sam Houston to a 66-43 homecoming win over Southside.
“Coming into it, we felt like those two were going to have a big night,” Sam Houston head coach Chad Paulk said.
The win kept the Broncos (6-1, 4-0) in first place in District 3-5A along with Acadiana (7- 0, 4-0), which beat New Iberia 46-0. Sam Houston will host Acadiana next week in a game that will likely decide the district championship.
Bartley completed 30 of 40 passes without an interception for 502 yards and six touchdowns.
“Bartley can deliver the ball to anybody,” Paulk said. “At one point in the game, I told the coaches that we are experiencing something very special.
“We have a very special quarterback and it is fun to watch every Friday.”
Grice was nearly unstoppable as he caught 17 passes for a career-high 305 yards. He went over the 300-yard mark on an 16-yard touchdown with 7:55 left in the game.
“Anytime you watch us play football, everyone says who is No. 1 at the end of the game,” Paulk said. “He is a big-time playmaker.
“Any time you give him the ball, something special is about to happen.”
Sophomore running back Dylan Abshire also had a big game with 17 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Sam Houston and Southside (4-3, 1-3) got into a shootout in the first half, combing for 780 yards and 73 points in the first 24 minutes.
Bartley and the Broncos’ receiving corps had a field day in the first half. Bartley threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns. Grice made 11 catches for 233 yards and Luke Yuhasz had five for 132 by halftime.
Wide receiver Alyjah Mouton caught a pair of 10-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter to put the Broncos up 14-0 and Davis Dow, who made a winning field goal last week, booted a 27-yarder for a 24-0 lead.
In his first game back from injury, junior cornerback Keagon Aaron made his presence felt. With the Sharks threatening to breach the Broncos’ red zone, Aaron picked off Dillon Monette at the Broncos’ 11-yard line. Sam Houston needed two plays, a 21-yard reception by Grice and a 63-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Yuhasz, to increase its lead to 21-0.
The Broncos’ special teams had a big play in the first half. Down 24-7, Southside tried an onside kick, but Sean Burkhead scooped it up and returned it 53 yards for a 31-7 lead. Burkhead and Ryan Chaney led the defense with eight tackles each.
Monette threw for 368 yards and three touchdowns and Rhett Peloquin had nine catches for 212 and two scores.
“I want to say hats off to Southside,” Paulk said. “We knew coming in that they had a very good offense.
“They can throw the ball down field to two really good receivers. We have to do a better job tackling and our guys know it. It is not a secret what we are going to be working on Monday. We have our hands full next week with those big boys at Acadiana.”
Grice broke the 100-yard march for the sixth consecutive week and has 981 yards in seven games. Yuhasz had his third 100-yard game with six catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
