After a long search, Sulphur High School has its next head football coach in Tyler Junior College offensive coordinator Chris Towery.
“I think that he is a student of the game,” Sulphur principal David Pool said Friday evening after confirming the hire. “I think he fits what we are trying to build at this high school.
“I think he is going to bring not only the players and coaches but also the community back together. He has a wide range of experience. He has worked at a lot of different places, and I think that he is up to the challenge. A lot of thought and time went into it, and I really felt like he was the best choice for the position.”
Towery has more than two decades of coaching experience. Towery spent one season at Tyler JC.
His career also includes stints as a co-offensive coordinator at a pair of 6A Texas schools in Spring-Westfield (2015-2017) and Pasadena (2010) and 5A Gelena Park (2018).
Towery was the tight ends coach at the University of Houston in 1999 and assistant offensive line coach at UL-Lafayette in 2003 and 2004.
He was the offensive coordinator for state champion Redemptorist in 2005.
It is Towery’s fourth head coach job. He led Winnfield in 2006, Cecilia in 2002 and Abbeville 2013 and 2014.
“It is a great honor,” Towery said. “In my opinion, it is one of the top jobs in the state of Louisiana.
“I made a decision that I wanted to move back closer to home. My wife is from south Louisiana. I just think that it is a great job. I think that it is a sleeping giant. I think that it is a great community. I am just blessed and honored to have the opportunity to be the head coach there.”
Tower graduated from Pineville High School in 1990 and UL-Lafayette in 1999.
Towery takes over for Cecil Thomas, who was fired just four games into the 2019 season.
He will be tasked with rebuilding a program that went 1-9 last season.
“To me, it should be one of the best programs in the state,” Towery said. “I know that is what the people in the community want and expect.
“We are going to work hard to give that to them. I am more than excited. When I got the call, I was thrilled. I am very humbled to have this opportunity. We are going in there with a lot of energy. This is the most excited I have been in a long time. It is going to be fun.”
