LAKE CHARLES — W.W. Lewis Middle School eighth grader Kolby Stelly owned the Louisiana Junior High Finals Rodeo last week at the Burton Coliseum Complex.

Stelly won the All-Around Cowboy title by more than 100-point margin, plus state titles in steer bareback riding, goat tying and bull riding. He qualified for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo (June 18-24th, Lebanon, Tennessee) in six of the eight events he competed in.

Stelly finished with 812.3 points to win the all-around title while Chance Little was a distant second with 703.2 points.

In steer bareback, Stelly out pointed Mason Spain by 41.4 points, 137.1-95.3. He won the first round with a 63-point ride and placed second (53) in the second round and third (56) in the short go.

Stelly started the finals in goat tying trailing Jayce Reeves by 11 points but won two of three rounds and the average title to win the championship by 4.6 points (136.1-131.5). He had two of the top three times in the event including a 10.64 to win the short go on Sunday.

Stelly won the bull riding title despite falling off before the eight-second buzzer in first go round. He rebounded by placing second in the final two rounds and second in the average.

He also placed in saddle bronc riding and chute dogging and third in tie down roping. He was leading the average in tie down roping through two rounds but an 18.26 second run in the short go dropped him to third overall and fourth in the average.

Our Lady’s School’s Gabby Gunter, riding the same horse, Blaze, that her sister Brooklyn is riding this week in the high school finals, breezed to the pole bending championship with three sub-20 second times.

She trailed defending champ Jaden Thomas (Rosepine JH) by five points to start the competition but over took her after winning the first two rounds. Gunter went on to win all three rounds and the average. Her top time was a 19.289 second run in the first go around.

Gunter also qualified for nationals in ribbon roping and barrel racing. She second with partner Gatlin Martin ribbon roping and fourth in barrels. W.W. Lewis Middle School’s Claire Vincent and Dominic Broussard won the title with 188.6 points while Martin and Gunter finished with 154.2 points.

Martin won the boys’ breakaway title for the third straight year despite starting with a 15-point deficit to Kase Busby. Martin never placed worse than sixth in any round and won the second go with a time of 2.81 seconds. His second-place finish in the short go (3.05 seconds) was enough secure the average title and beat Busby by just .3 points, 105.6-105.3.

Martin also qualified for nationals in team roping with Chance Little after placing third.
