Sydney Weidner (Sulphur HS)

Sulphur High School senior Sydney Weidner placed fourth in the 500 and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle Saturday at the LHSAA Division I state swimming championships at the SPAR Aquatic Center.

Sulphur High School senior Sydney Weidner finished her career with a pair of top-five finishes at the LHSAA Division I state swim meet Saturday held at the SPAR Aquatic Center.

Her best finish was in the 500 freestyle. She started as the sixth seed and nearly finished on the podium. She dropped more than nine seconds off her seed time to touch the wall in 5 minutes, 24.22 seconds, and less than three seconds behind third-place finisher CeCe Werth (5:21.44) of St. Joseph’s Academy.

Weidner jumped five spots from the prelims to finish fifth in the 200-yard freestyle. She was the 10th seed going into the prelims on Friday and earned the seventh seed in Saturday’s finals. In the finals, Weiner was in seventh place after the first 50 yards but didn’t give up and finished fifth with a time of 2:02.93.

Weidner helped lead the Lady Tors to an 11th place team finish with 67 points.

Weidner along with Beatriz Rodrigues, Brook Leblanc, Arden Barnard (200 medley) and Arden Stroderd (400 freestyle) placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.28) and 10th in the 400 freestyle (4:02.98).

The Tors used a pair of top-10 relay teams to place ninth in the team standings with 82 points.

Dyllan Lavoi, Roland Graham, Justin Fruge and Brice Bounds took sixth in the 200 medley (1:45.75) and 400 freestyle relay (3:27.54).

Bounds placed eighth in the 100 (49.98) and 200 (1:49.98) freestyle.

Fruge was 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.84) and 15th in the 200 individual medley (2:08.24).

St. Joseph’s Academy beat Mandeville 295-238 to win the girls team title while Catholic-Baton Rouge easily won the boys team title with 489.5 points. Jesuit was a distant second with 367 points.

Barbe junior Natalie Stump extended her streak to three 200-yard freestyle state championships.

Stump won her third state title in 1 minute, 52.89 seconds and beat the rest of the field by 6.37 seconds. Stump has dropped 3.24 seconds in the 200 since her first title in 2017.

She nearly won a second gold medal in the 500 freestyle (4:58.75) but lost Lafayette’s Anni Thompson (4:58.63) by .12 seconds. It was Stump’s third consecutive runner up finish in the 500 and Thompson’s second consecutive state title.

With a just a few minutes to recover, Stump jumped back in the pool and helped lead her team to a runner up finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Stump along with Cypris Wilkinson, Taylor Hebert and Emma Puckett edged St. Joseph’s Academy by .01 seconds for the silver medal with a time of 1:42.98.
