LAKE CHARLES — Hank Shaheen surged ahead of the field Saturday to join Doug Quienalty at the top of the leader board with 18 holes left at the 42nd annual Lake Charles Toyota City Championship at Mallard Cove Golf Course.

Shaheen shot a 6-under 66, the lowest round of the weekend so far, and sits at 3-under 141 along with Quienalty.

“I had a good round today,” Shaheen said. “I made some putts and had a good pairing with Channing (Kile) and Nick Sonnier. We had a good time.”

Today’s round could be the last for the City Championship at Mallard Cove and it could be a classic finish with four former champs within four shots of the lead in Matt Nicholas, Gage Primeaux, Billy Gabbert and Neithen Allen. The new course at the Morganfield development is expected to ready next year.

“It is going to probably take another three or four-under,” Quienalty said. “That is what I am thinking tomorrow.

“Hank is a strong player and you have Gage Primeaux behind us. You have a lot of good golfers behind us, so it is any body’s game”

Shaheen improved his play on the green Saturday after a first-round 75. He played bogey-free with birdies on Nos. 1, 4, 8, 12, 14 and 15.

“I had a little bit of an issue with my putter yesterday,” Shaheen said. “I fixed it and it is rolling a lot better.

“I didn’t have any three putts. Yesterday, I had five.”

Quienalty, the first round leader, got off to another hot start with birdies Nos. 1, 3 and 8 and made the turn with a six-stroke lead over the rest of the field. But some less than idea shots off the tee caught up with him. On No. 10, he drove his tee shot into some trees just ahead and to the left of the tee box and ended up having to settle for a bogey. His opening shot on No. 13 nearly went into the woods and he bogeyed three of the next four holes.

“On the front nine, I played solid again,” Quienalty said. “On the back nine, I missed a few short putts and had two bad drives and before you know it you are over par on the back side.

“It is a little tighter than the front side. It was playing tough and got a little windy back there. I just went mentally dead on that hole (16). I tried to hit a little draw there with right to left wind and you just shouldn’t do that. I just overdrew it.”

Shaheen is in familiar territory but is hoping this time to hold on to the lead. He led Primeaux by one shot in 2017, but ended up third, five shots behind Primeaux.

“I have to get to the back nine in the hunt and see what happens,” Shaheen said.

Four-time champ Nicholas birdied two of the last four holes and sits one shot off the lead at 142 while 2017 champ Primeaux and seven-time champ Gabbert are tied for fourth at 143. Gabbert put himself back in title contention by going five-under over the final five holes, including an eagle on No. 18.

Defending champion Allen sits in sixth place at 145 while 2018 runner up Reid Giardina is one shot behind him.
