The Sulphur Lady Tors once again used their suffocating full court press to perfection Tuesday night in a 57-26 blowout win over Sam Houston in District 3-5A action.

Sulphur (20-7, 6-3) hounded the Lady Broncos (14-14, 2-7) into 22 turnovers while holding their 6'1” freshman center Samantha Logan to just eight points.

“That is probably the best I have seen our full court press do all year,” Sulphur head coach Helen Lefevre said. “We created a ton of turnovers that led to buckets.

“We were trying to push her (Logan) out of the lane a little more than she is comfortable with. When the ball went inside we just doubled down on her just to see what she would do. She (Logan) is strong and she is just a freshman and she will get better but I though we did a good job with her tonight.”

The game was not without is tense moments as the Lady Broncos twice erased big Sulphur leads early in the game only to see the Lady Tors erase their gains.

“They are so much more physical than we are,” Sam Houston head coach Korey Arnold said. “They were physical all night long.

“We kind of played timid tonight. They had a minute run in the first quarter and a minute run in the second quarter that allowed to separate by halftime. In the second half we let the start with a little run and we never could recoup. I don't think it was what we were doing but how we were doing it. Our kids didn't play hard. We gave them a lot of easy baskets late in the game.”

Kristina Brooks forced a turnover tipping the ball away from a Sam Houston player. Hannah Cupit scooped up the ball and passed it back to a streaking Brooks who laid it in for two points and a 9-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the game. But Sam Houston rallied with a 6-0 run capped by a put back by Logan after a missed three-point attempt by Nicole Clark.

Sulphur pushed their lead back out to 10 on a jumper in the lane by Julieanne Elder at the end of the first quarter but Sam Houston again fought their way back into the game.

Haley Cook hit a three while Clark made a pair of three throws and Trinity Knox split Sulphur's defense and drove the lane for two to get Sam Houston within three, 16-13, with 5:33 left in the second. But pressure from Sulphur's full court press started to weigh heavily on Sam Houston who committed six turnovers in the final minutes of the first half.

Sulphur poured it on in the second half outscoring Sam Houston 20-6 in the third quarter with six points apiece from Allison Dalton and Brooks.

Brooks finished with 12 points and four steals to lead Sulphur while Cupit and Ashley Austin scored nine points apiece. Cupit also had five steals and seven rebounds while Brooks Richard had eight points, four steals and five assists.
