The McNeese Department of Performing Arts will present a free spring concert featuring the McNeese Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Rick Condit at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in Ralph Squires Recital Hall. Also performing will be the McNeese Little Big Band directed by Tim McMillen.
The bands will perform music written for big and small bands over the last 40 years including works by Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton, as well as original works for contemporary big band.
The jazz ensemble is preparing for its upcoming Romanian tour scheduled for the end of May. The two-week tour will see the group performing eight concerts in concert halls around the country and will also include appearances on national television and outdoor festivals.
“We are privileged to be part of a very historic event,” said Condit. “We will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first tours to Romania by American university big bands that took place at the height of the cold war.” The band will also help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the George Enescu University of the Arts in the city of Iasi, where Condit served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 2002.
