Several committee recommended changes to Calcasieu Parish School System policy were accepted by the School Board Tuesday night at their monthly meeting.
Among the changes is a provision that students who reach their eighth grade year would be directed, with the help of school counselors and the student's parents, to create a five year "Individual Graduation" plan.
"Such a plan shall include a sequence of courses which is consistent with the stated goals for one year after graduation," the policy says, and will be reviewed annually by the student, counselors and parents.
New to the policy is the following provision: "Every student who seeks to pursue a career major shall have the written permission of his/her parent or other legal guardian. Each student's Individual Graduation Plan shall be signed by the student and the student's parent or other legal guardian."
Changes to the way that the School Board handles Student Driver Training were also approved. Previously, the program was open only to students who were eligible for a driver's permit.
With the changes, students who are fifteen years of age or older are able to participate in the program, which includes a minimum of eight hours of driving experience and no less than 30 hours of classroom instruction. Further, students who are in their 9th grade year and are within 90 days of turning 15 will be able to participate in the classroom portion of the program.
Another change is an addition to the policy that determines which school a particular subset of students would attend.
"Any child temporarily residing within the district who has no permanent address, or who has been abandoned by his or her parent, or who is in foster care, shall be enrolled and allowed to attend school in the zone appropriate to the special circumstance of the child," the new policy change said.
It also indicates that surrogate parents would be appointed if they are appropriate for special needs students.
In other School Board business, Robert Barrentine was named Sulphur High School's newest temporary assistant principal.
