Cajun singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, activist and essayist Zachary Richard will return to Lake Charles for the second time in a year after a very long absence. He performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in F.G. Bulber Auditorium at McNeese State University. The concert is co-presented by the McNeese Banners Cultural Series and Louisiana Crossroads.
Tickets are part of a Banners Series membership. Individual tickets are available online at www.banners.org (click on Zachary Richard) and will be sold at the door. Prices are $20 for adults, $5 for students and free to McNeese students with ID. A basic membership to the Banners Series includes two tickets to all events. Memberships are available by calling the Banners office at (337) 475-5123 or going online.
Richard performed at Central School for Louisiana Crossroads to a packed house last June. The crowd was so enthusiastic that he agreed to come back as soon as possible, and he’s keeping that promise Saturday.
He’s also bringing two gifted and accomplished musical friends to share this unique evening of songs from his expansive and singular bilingual songbook. New Orleans pianist extraordinaire, David Torkanowsky, and gifted south Louisiana guitarist, Shane Theriot, will join Richard onstage, adding their broad artistic palettes to the musical conversation.
And, as is traditional when Louisiana Crossroads is one of the presenters, there will be a chance for conversation. Todd Mouton will host a Q-and-A format between the band and the audience during the evening. Zachary Richard has covered quite a bit of turf over the years. From country rock to atmospheric pop, his work as a songwriter and musician has been marked by its personal and political passion, and as much by its sense of exploration as its advocacy for cultural and environmental preservation and perpetuation.
During a career marked by unparalleled popularity in Canada, France, the United States and Louisiana, Richard has remained true to his roots, seeking out new ways to make a better life from the things he has found, discovered and invented. Through his dedicated promotion of his native French language and urgent environmental causes, he has continued to raise important issues – and push for thoughtful solutions – in the Cajun and Acadian homelands.
The Banners Series brings 22 main events to the community this spring. It also brings some 60 live performances into K-12 schools, outreach which is partially sponsored by CITGO Petroleum Company and the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
