In July 2007, a deputy with the Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T. Team) conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10. During a search of the vehicle, the deputy located eight kilograms (17.60 pounds) of cocaine valued at $250,000 that was concealed in the spare tire. The two occupants, Samuel E. Colfield, 102 Clover Circle, Murfeesboro, NC; and Adrian D. Manley, 103 Vison Dr., Ahoskie, NC, were arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
During the follow-up investigation, a detective with the C.A.T. Team was able to identify, locate, and obtain an arrest warrant for Gratiniano Castillo, 10519 Bretton Dr., Houston, TX, who was the cocaine supplier. C.A.T. Team investigators coordinated a joint operation with the Texas Department of Public Safety and executed the arrest warrant on Castillo.
After Castillo’s arrest and further investigation, the C.A.T. Team detective was able to link Castillo to an ongoing Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation that was being conducted in the Eastern District of North Carolina. North Carolina agents were able to seize 18 kilograms (39.60 pounds) of cocaine valued at $570,000; 78 grams of heroin valued at $23,400; six firearms; and over $345,000 in U.S. currency as a result of the multi-jurisdictional investigation. Fourteen defendants were prosecuted and Manley is awaiting trial here in Calcasieu Parish. Castillo was sentenced to 480 months in federal prison for his significant role he played in the organization.
Earlier this month, C.A.T. Team Deputy Stuart Henderson and Detective Jack Bartlett were honored at the Annual Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Conference in Ashville, North Carolina for the Case of the Year for the Eastern District of North Carolina for their part in the investigation. Henderson initiated the traffic stop in July 2007 and Bartlett conducted the follow-up investigation.
