For Sulphur resident Carla Jean Cranfill, Waking Ghosts has been a story in the making for seven years. The novel she “knew had to be finished” was finally published and put out to the public in May 2010. On Saturday, July 17, the author celebrated her novel with a book signing at the Henning Cultural Center in Sulphur. Over 60 fans of the book attended the event.
Set in south Louisiana, Waking Ghosts features the lives and secrets of the Batiste women. Eleven year old Lovey Batiste comes face to face with a past she never knew she had after her mama realizes they can no longer live on their own and brings them “home” to the small town of Franklin City, Louisiana. There, Lovey gets to know a grandmother she never knew she had and the secrets that her mother has kept from her for her entire life. Worse still, she has no idea that she will be paying the price for the mistakes the women in her family have made.
The book’s author was born and raised in Southwest Louisiana. She has spent her life surrounded by books and writing for herself or for family and friends, first creating short stories and poems and then moving into journals and attempts at novel writing. She is married to Donny Cranfill. The couple have two sons, Jesse and Colten.
