Westlake City Council Member Lori Ellis Peterson has announced her candidacy for re-election to the council.
Elected in May 2007 as a result of a special election, Ms. Peterson has worked diligently to assist in bringing about positive change to the city of Westlake. As a new council member, she is credited with facilitating several major accomplishments during her three years of service.
She was selected to represent, and successfully testified on behalf of, the city before the Louisiana House of Representatives Municipal Affairs Committee with regards to the expansion of services and customers to the city-owned natural gas system. She authored and presented the Westlake “Critical Infrastructure Report” to Governor Bobby Jindal during a Westlake delegation meeting held in Baton Rouge in December 2008.
Additionally, she successfully secured a DOTD “Safe Route To Schools” grant in the amount of $240,000 for a sidewalk to be located on Shady Lane, extending from Sampson Street to Walker Drive. Funding for traffic control equipment for the Westlake Police Department was also included in the grant award.
Prior to being elected to the Westlake City Council, Peterson served twelve years as a Ward 4 Recreation District 1 Board Member. During her tenure, she was elected Board President five times. She was also very involved in the planning and opening of the Multi-Purpose Center in Westlake. Active in the community, Peterson is a proud supporter of the Westlake High School Band and FBLA Club at Westlake High School. She is a volunteer with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and a sponsor of the Westlake Senior Citizen Center.
Peterson is a graduate of Westlake High School and attended McNeese State University. She is employed by John H. Carter Company, located in Westlake. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin M. (Bernice) Ellis, Jr., she is the mother of three grown sons and has three grandchildren.
In review of the past three years, Peterson reflects “we have achieved many accomplishments and made significant changes within our city government that will reflect positively for our city in the years ahead. However, there is still more work to be done.” Utilizing a common sense approach to government, based on sound financial disciplines and a master-planned community growth initiative, she is confident many other families will soon call Westlake home.
“It is my sincere hope the citizens of Westlake will allow me the opportunity to continue working on their behalf by re-electing me to serve as their city council member, Division B,” stated Peterson.
