September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Calcasieu Parish Public Library wants to make sure that all Calcasieu Parish citizens have the smartest card of all - a library card.
Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers.
”A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Library Director Michael Sawyer. “Today’s libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access. In doing so, libraries provide children with not only the tools to be literate, but information literate as well. There’s a lot happening at public libraries, and the best part for both children and parents - in these though economic times - is that it’s all free with a library card.”
Getting a library card is easy. Library cards are free to anyone who lives, works, owns property, or attends school in Calcasieu Parish. To apply for a library card, visit the Library nearest you and complete a registration card. Present proof of your current mailing address, i.e. driver's license, checkbook, or received mail and/or photo I.D. Once the application is complete, and I.D. requirements are met, a card will be issued.
For those under 18 years old, the registration card must be completed by the applicant, and signed by their parent or legal guardian. Proof of address of the parent or legal guardian must be presented. Once the application is complete, and I.D. requirements are met, a card will be issued
A library card gives the applicant checkout privileges at any of the 13 branches of the library. The card enables the holder to access all the resources on the CPPL website, including those provided by the State Library of Louisiana. Where else can you get free tutoring from 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday? Through www.homeworkla.org students with a valid library card can connect with one of the 1800 tutors who are certified teachers, professors, graduate school students, university students and professionals who are experts in their field and have passed a third party security background check.
Library Southwest cards are also honored from the following parishes: Allen, Beauregard, Cameron, Jeff Davis, and Vernon. LSW cards are issued at your home parish library.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
