•Monthly Meeting of Quilt Guild
The Calcasieu Cut Ups Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, September 3 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Managan Center on the corner of Sampson and McKinley Streets in Westlake. Guests are always welcome. The program will be presented by Judy Beskow on color and fabric choices.

•First Monday in the Atrium
The Foundation at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is pleased to present First Monday in the Atrium, a musical interlude held on the first Monday of each month from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the atrium at Memorial Hospital on Oak Park Boulevard. September’s performance will feature pianist Diana Castleberry on Tuesday, September 8 rather than Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. On Monday, October 5, they will welcome the Bill Rose Trio, who will perform the music of the Kingston Trio; Peter, Paul and Mary and other classic 1960s folk. •Peripheral Artery Disease Seminar
A free seminar on peripheral artery disease is scheduled for Thursday, September 15 at 6 p.m. featuring John Winterton, MD, staff cardiologist at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. It will be held at Dynamic Dimensions in Sulphur, 545 Cypress Street. Dr. Winterton will discuss the signs and symptoms of peripheral artery disease, conventional treatment for blocked arteries and newer, minimally invasive procedures. Symptoms and conditions associated with peripheral artery disease include diabetes, leg and hip pain, decreased circulation in the legs or numbness and tingling in the toes. A screening for peripheral artery disease will be offered the morning of September 15 for $25. •Girl Talk Class
Girl Talk, a class offered by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, will be held Saturday, September 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Large East Conference Room inside West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, near the Stelly Lane entrance. It is designed for girls ages 9 to 12 and their mother or guardian. Presented by a registered nurse, topics include physical and emotional changes to expect during puberty, what happens during menstruation and good hygiene habits. There is a $15 fee for each girl attending, with a $20 maximum per family. Class size is limited, call (337) 527-4361 to reserve space.
•Calcasieu Council on Aging’s Senior Prom
In response to the growing need and cost of the CCOA’s Meals on Wheels program, the CCOA and Southern Home Health have organized a fundraiser, the 1st Annual Senior Prom. It will be held on Saturday, September 19, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center Exhibition Hall. The theme is “Lost in the 50’s”, and there will be music, court presentations (each senior center will present two kings and two queens from their center), pictures, classic cars and more. Money raised goes directly to the program to help clients on the waiting list as well as those new clients coming in daily. •Literacy Awareness Day at the Prien Lake Mall
The Literacy Council of Southwest Louisiana, Inc. will be hosting a “Literacy Awareness Day” at the Prien Lake Mall on Saturday, September 12, 2009 in recognition of International Literacy Awareness Day. A variety of activities will take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Sears Court. The day will be fun-filled with games, guest readers, and prizes. Entries for the Literacy Awareness Day coloring contest may be turned in until 12 noon. Visit the Sears Court beginning 10 a.m. for an entry form or to complete your coloring sheet. Celebrity readers for storytelling will be present beginning at 10 a.m. The first 200 children visiting the Literacy Awareness Day activities will receive a free book. The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Memory Walk® will take place on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles, LA. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. Held annually in hundreds of communities around the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers and corporate and community leaders. They are on the move to end Alzheimer’s. •Elvis for Autism Concert
Elvis for Autism, a benefit concert for Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana (ASSL) will be held at the L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort Event Center on Sunday, October 25, at 7 p.m. John Ieyoub, nationally acclaimed tribute artist, will be the featured performer along with an all-star cast headed by Chris Flowers and the Louisiana Express. Ieyoub has performed at private and corporate functions and at casinos across the state and in Mississippi. This will be Ieyoub’s last local performance.
The event will benefit the newly opened Creole House for adults with autism, a dream that has become a reality. As of June 15, clients who need care twenty-four hours a day from specially trained attendants, are living in the home. The first of its kind in Louisiana, the home is modeled after the internationally acclaimed Autism Services in Huntington, West Virginia where several ASSL board members have been trained.

•Native American Exhibit, Lecture Series at Brimstone Museum
The Brimstone Historical Society is proud to announce a new exhibit of Native American Artifacts, on loan from John Guy of DeRidder, Mike Tenney of Sulphur, and General Erbon Wise of Sulphur. This exhibit will be on display from July 16 through September 3 and is accompanied by a series of lectures every Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
