Lake Charles, LA - Renee Baker, Louisiana’s NFIB Director, will helm Friday’s Chamber SWLA Brown Bag Lunch. Baker will review Federal Legislation that the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) deems harmful to Small Business such as the Cow Tax (a.k.a. the Poop Legislation), Cap & Trade and Card Check.
Cow Tax – as one of the suggestions offered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR), the Cow Tax will regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act by levying a tax on livestock. There could be a “tax” of $175 per dairy cow and $87.50 per head of beef cattle.
Cap & Trade – another program targeting emissions, Cap & Trade aims to limit the number of emissions produced by issuing GHG emissions credits. As some entities will emit more than their cap, they will be able to purchase additional credits either from the government or lower-producing entities which may have excess credits.
Card Check – This legislation aims to make it easier for organizations to unionize, but eliminates the secret ballot and imposes tougher mediation rules against employers.
As always, the Chamber SWLA Brown Bag is a FREE benefit of Chamber SWLA membership. Participants bring their lunch and the Chamber SWLA provides the information.
This month’s Brown Bag will be on July 17, 2009, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the 1st floor conference room of the Willis Noland Resource Center (120 West Pujo Street, Lake Charles).
