Sulphur Regional/Maplewood Library Manager, Esther Pennington, along with 14 other colleagues from the Calcasieu Parish Public Library system, attended the Public Library Association’s National Conference held in Portland, Oregon on March 23 to March 28.
The conference is held every other year and PLA members from across the country and across the globe come together for the American Library Association’s largest conference devoted to public librarianship. The PLA National Conference has developed a reputation for excellence and is the most highly regarded professional development event for those involved with library services. Each conference offers more than 100 top quality continuing education programs from which to choose, several social events, networking opportunities and a bustling exhibit hall packed withe the latest in library products and services all designed to help librarians stay ahead of the curve and continue to offer communities the services they need and want.
According to Sari Feldman, 2010 PLA President, the services of public libraries across the country are needed now more than ever. People are looking to their library for information and government programs, to learn skills that will help them find jobs and start new careers, to fill gaps in education for themselves and their children, and they are looking for affordable entertainment, access to books, movies, the internet and other media.
Ms. Pennington notes her appreciation for the opportunity afforded by library and parish administrators to attend the PLA conference in Portland.
“The sessions were inspiring and informative and perfectly designed to provide guidance for the work that we do in public libraries. I have been rewarded with a wealth of information that will assist in developing even better service to our communities.”
