A year ago, as Eric Manuel tells it, a local photographer came into the Henning House with a collection of photos. He'd been photographing interesting things in the area and as he traveled, but he really didn't have a place to display them.
This was a common problem for local artists, Manuel said. He's the creative director at the Henning House, helping to put together art shows with executive director Thom Trahan.
"I knew a few photographers, and started calling around, asking if they'd be interested in being in a snow called inFocus," Manuel said
His calloutl brought in a number of photographers, including quite a few local favorites. The show begins on January 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Henning House here in Sulphur.
"We have some really amazing work from Geoff Russell, who is well known for his photography of flowers and landscapes. We have many artists like Kelly Keers, Annie Burton, and Reggie Keogh who traveled to England, Italy and Greece to capture the country and cityscapes of Europe," Manuel said.
"Others like Lindsey Janies, Jock McGregor, Blaine Bourgeois and Charlote LaBarbera have captured images of our Cajun life style and wetlands."
The exhibit is a showcase of local talent, giving each photographer the chance to have their work presented in a gallery setting right here in Sulphur.
"InFocus was created to serve the needs of local photographers and to get their work recognized by the community. It became very clear that there was overwhelming interest in the show," Manuel said.
"Jackie Dowden and the staff at the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA also helped us reach many new artists who have not shown in the Henning Cultural Center. All of these efforts combined to make the show possible.
Of course, Manuel does have a favorite piece in the show.
"It's strange, but my favorite piece features this little green lizard. It is by an artists named Paul Maia. We've all seen these lizards around here, but for some reason this really drew me in," he said.
Manuel and the Cultural Center is always looking for new talent to exhibit. Interested? Get in touch with Manuel by calling 337-527-0357 or email at ericmanuel1978@gmail.com.
