IDFY Conference
Craig Scott was in the Columbine High School library in April 1999, when a teacher ran in, frantic about two students shooting classmates. Scott took cover under a table. He escaped only to learn that his 17-year-old sister, Rachel Scott, was the first of the 13 people killed that day. Scott now tours the country for “Rachel’s Challenge,” a nonprofit started by his father that promotes school safety - not by advocating for metal detectors and locked schools, but by challenging students and teachers to live more compassionate lives.
On Thursday, October 2, Scott will bring his message to Lake Charles for the annual IDFY conference at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Tailored for students in high school and middle school, the IDFY conference will also feature breakout sessions on prescription drug abuse problems, healthy dating, choosing respect, alcohol and other drugs, and a law and order panel on DWI’s. The IDFY conference iis open to middle and high school students throughout Calcasieu Parish. To join, students agree to adopt a drug-free lifestyle and prove it by taking a voluntary zero tolerance drug test. To ensure a drug-free membership, students are selected at random for re-testing. The program is sponsored by Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier and is the only program of its kind in the state of Louisiana. To register, Calcasieu Parish students should contact their school counselors. Calcasieu home school students can contact Penny Haxthausen with Calcasieu Parish Drug-Free Schools.
