More than 2,500 Southwest Louisiana residents walked in the in the Heart Walk on the beautiful McNeese campus on Saturday, Nov. 19.  The annual event raised over $150,000 to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers, with additional funds still coming in.
Festivities included a 5K walk, live music by Judd Bares and friends, jambalaya cook off,  a fun kids zone, various opportunities through sponsored booths and a program led by 2011 Heart Walk Chair Bill Hankins, President of  West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital and KPLC’s John Bridges and Elizabeth Temple. The Heart Walk is locally sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital.
West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital was recognized at the Heart Walk for securing the position of Top Fundraising Company. The hospital raised over $32,000. Renita Lawrence, with Jennings American Legion Hospital, was announced as the Top Fundraising Walker. Brian Abshire with First National Bank took top honors in the Jambalaya Cook Off and Team Jacob won first place in the t-shirt contest.
There will be a SWLA Heart Walk Awards Party Jan. 12 where we will spotlight accomplishments and celebrate the success of the event and distribute group and individual awards. It will be held at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital’s Dynamic Dimensions in Sulphur.
“All contributions, big and small, further the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke, said Janice Ackley, Regional Director. Advances such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), cardiac catheterization, bypass surgery, stents, clotbusting drugs, pacemakers, and transplantation are among the many life-saving treatments and procedures that American Heart Association funding has supported,” she continued.
According to this year’s Heart Walk Chair, Bill Hankins, “Each day, nearly 2,400 Americans die from a cardiovascular disease. That’s an average of one death every 37 seconds. A leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke is lack of physical activity. With events like the Heart Walk, we are striving to change this through education and fundraising.”
Research has also found that individuals may gain two hours of life expectancy for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise they do. The American Heart Association movement offers free online resources to help live longer, stronger lives.
