Around 1 a.m. Friday, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle accident on Fabacher Rd. and Hwy. 108 in Edgerly. The investigation revealed Derick J. Moore, 28, 1762 Hwy. 388, Vinton, was driving south on Fabacher Rd. at what appears to be a high rate of speed and drove through the intersection at Hwy. 108, running the stop sign. The van went airborne approximately 30 feet across the south side ditch before it collided with a fence post. The fence post went through the windshield and struck the passenger, Rebecca A. Reyes, 28, 1213 East St.,Vinton. Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of her injuries.
Further investigation revealed Moore showed signs of impairment from alcohol. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 1st offense; careless operation; driving under suspension; and vehicular homicide.
As mandated by state law in all traffic fatalities, a toxicology report will be performed on Moore.
