With just hours before the Westlake City Council was to meet Wednesday night to discuss a possible out-of-court settlement in the suit brought against it and Councilman Wally Anderson by city employee Lonnie Smart, the special meeting was abruptly cancelled. According to Mayor Dan Cupit, the meeting was cancelled per the advice of city attorney John Van Norman III and Michael Veron, the attorney representing the city and Anderson on the lawsuit.

A Sulphur man was sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years of supervised released for illegally possessing multiple firearms. The sentence was announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley.
