On Wednesday, January 10 at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers of the Westlake Police Department were called to the scene of a shooting at 1601 Sampson Street and also a report of two subjects fleeing the scene.

When officers arrived they found 20-year-old Jalen Ortelli Handy of Westlake suffering from a gun shot wound.

Officers provided emergency assistance until Acadian Ambulance arrived on the scene. Unfortunately Handy passed away from his injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, officers located and arrested 22-year-old Derrick Ryan Small of Sulphur. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center for 2nd Degree Murder, Possession of CDS I with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon in the Presence of CDS, Possession of CDS I (marijuana) and Transactions Involving Proceeds from Drug Offenses.

Small’s bond was set at $1,030,000. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Westlake Police Department at 337-433-4151.
