The Sam Houston Lady Broncos clinched second in the District 5-4A track and field championships on Wednesday led by freshman long distance runner Sam Pavlovich.

Pavlovich swept the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M races on her way to earn the outstanding female track honor.

“She had a slight hamstring pull and she toughed it out,” said Lady Broncos’ head track coach Joe Cook. “She gutted it out and did well.”

In addition to Pavlovich’s three district wins, Tehia Duhon won the javelin as the only other Lady Bronco to win a district title on Wednesday.

The Lady Broncos team will fill 17 spots in regionals, the most in Cook’s tenure at Sam Houston.

“It’s the most we have sent to regionals and I have been here six years and it’s the first time we have finished runner-up in district in girls’ since I’ve been here,” stated Cook. “We just have some young ladies that want to compete.”

The Broncos will send 8  athletes along with a relay team to regionals next Wednesday led by Justin Brown, Trevor Avery and Aaron McFatter.

“Our kids worked hard all year,” said Sam Houston boys’ head coach Joey Deviller. “We have a real young crew and I think their work ethic is outstanding. We added a couple of coaches to our coaching staff, Coach Sean Peterson and Coach Greg Pavlovich, and they have done an outstanding job with our runners.

“I give all the credit to our assistant coaches for the miraculous job they did this year.”

Brown won the discus title with a season best 144’2” throw with Avery taking first in the 800M dash and McFatter winning the 3200M run.

“He’s been outstanding and consistent all year long,” Devillier said on Brown’s efforts. “The good thing about it is that he’s a junior and will be back next year.

“Trevor won the 800M which he’s been in the 2:03 to 2:02’s all year. Alex Gallien was another surprise that came in second in the 800M and he has been working hard all year.

“It was a total team effort and I give my hat to our kids; they worked hard this year.”

Looking forward to the regional meet to be held at Northside High School next week, Deviller looks for Brown and Avery to qualify for the state meet.

Cook looks for Pavlovich, Duhon, and Haley Carrier to move on to the state meet for the Lady Broncos.
