The Sam Houston Broncos wrapped up the outright District 4-4A championship with a 20-0 victory over the Washington-Marion Charging Indians on Tuesday.

Sam Houston honored 11 seniors prior to game and Broncos’ head coach Brad Book said that he was happy to see them all get into the game and contribute.

“It was senior day, and anytime you get to play all your seniors it’s a good night,” said Book.

The Bronco hitters practiced patience at the plate while working counts to find good pitches to hit.

Indians’ starter Halie Moses walked nine batters in two innings of play while allowing 12 runs on seven hits with eight runs being earned.

Tyler Theriot took Moses deep to left field to lead the Bronco charge to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

“That was Theriot’s eleventh of the year,” Book said. “And I think he has hit a home run in each of the last four games we’ve had.

“He’s on a tear right now and hitting the ball extremely hard.”

Andrew LaFosse hit the Broncos’ second home run of the game in the second inning to score three more runs to cap off an eight run inning to take a 12-0 lead.

The Broncos added eight more runs in the third off Duane Deruso on four hits and four Washington-Marion errors.

Josh Anders carried a perfect game into the third inning. Deruso broke up the perfect bid while reaching on a wild pitch on a third strike. Anders struck out the side to end the inning.

Anders finished with six strikeouts while allowing no hits and no runs.

The Indians picked up their only two hits off of senior pitcher Austin O’Quinn. Jonathan Vital broke up a no-hitter for the Sam Houston staff with a single up the middle in the fifth inning. Deruso followed while adding the only other hit for Washington-Marion.

O’Quinn pitched two innings allowing two hits and struck out three batters.

Evan Powell led the Sam Houston offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI’s and three runs scored with LaFosse adding a 1-for-1 outing and three RBI’s and three walks and four runs scored.

The Broncos will travel to DeRidder on Thursday and will conclude the season in Alexandria against Airline on Saturday.
