It wasn’t a question of whether the Sam Houston Lady Broncos could get runners on base, but can they get them across the plate. But in the fifth inning, they did while Brianna Granger sat down 13 batters to win 5-0 at Barbe over the Lady Bucs on Thursday.
Sam Houston stranded six runners, four in scoring position, before pushing two runs across in the fifth frame.
Karli Wainwright led off the inning with a hard shot to third, but reached base on the throw by Barbe’s Kaitlyn LaBove. Wainwright then stole second and third to get in prime scoring position with no one out.
“I had a bunt and run on and she was able to slide around the tag,” Lady Broncos head coach Beth Domingue on Wainwright’s steal to second. “She thought it was a wild pitch and the catcher dropped the ball. But it was good for her to read that it was going to be a wild pitch.”
Wainwright scored two batters later when her sister, Pam Wainwright hit a double to left center also scoring Kim Kennedy who reached base on a walk to make the score 2-0.
Granger carried a perfect game going into the bottom of the fifth, but walked the first batter of the inning and allowed a hit to Brooke David to left that broke up the no hitter.
The Lady Broncos stranded two runners in the sixth, and went to the plate in the seventh looking for insurance.
“Every time they come into a huddle, they are looking for insurance,” Domingue said. “I told them that two is not enough. That’s just a one hit ball game.”
Sam Houston responded adding three insurance runs with another RBI double by Pam Wainwright and a single to right by Granger that allowed Wainwright and Brandi Reed to score to make the score 5-0.
Pam Wainwright lead all hitters with a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI’s and two doubles.
“She’s not one to let nerves get to her,” said Domingue on Wainwright’s outing at the plate. “She’s the one I expect to get it done.”
Granger allowed a leadoff hit to Sara Corbello, but struck out the next three Lady Bucs to end the game.
Along with the 13 strikeouts, Granger allowed only two hits, two walks, but most importantly zero runs.
“She did great. Her curveball was really working tonight. Towards the end, she battled and did good of keeping them off balance.”
Corbello pitched for the Lady Bucs and had five strikeouts, allowed five runs on seven hits and walked seven Sam Houston batters.
NOTE: The Lady Broncos stranded 10 runners on base, seven in scoring position.
