The No. 3 Sam Houston Lady Broncos rolled to a 15-0 win over No. 30 Woodlawn-Shreveport on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The Lady Broncos scored four runs in the first inning but none were as a result of a hit. But their offense started rolling in the second inning with three extra base hits.
“I don’t think that we came in very locked in,” Sam Houston head coach Beth Domingue said. “I think that we just showed up and figured it would happen for us.
“We hit well but just not in the first inning. We had base running errors and a lot of mental errors. It is going to get a lot harder. After the first round it is tough from there on out. We are definitely going to have to make a few adjustments at the plate and on the bases.”
Sam Houston will be at home again in the regional round when they take on No. 14 Grant who beat No. 19 Beau Chene 4-0 on Tuesday.
Taylor Wood was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom of the second and scored on a triple by Brooke Rozas. Baylee Corbello and Kim Kennedy hit back-to-back RBI doubles and Tori Lantz added an RBI on a ground out to make it 9-0 heading into the third inning.
Sam Houston’s picked up two runs on wild pitches and another on an error to start off the bottom of the third inning. Lantz hit an RBI double to the center field fence and Tiffany Degetyer added an RBI single up the middle. Wood ended the game on the 15-run mercy rule with a triple down the third the third base line that scored Degetyer.
Corbello struck out the side in the top of the first inning but Jacquanesha Samuel got an infield single to start off the top of the second. Samuel stole second and third but was left stranded after three more strikeouts by Corbello.
Woodlawn’s best chance to score came in the top of the third when Sigourney Palmer reached on a single to left field and Corbello walked Allison Chen. Palmer and Chen moved into scoring position on a double steal but again Corbello struck out the next three batters to end the threat.
Corbello went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Lantz went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Sam Houston.
