The Sam Houston Broncos mounted a fourth quarter rally but it was not enough as the Jennings Bulldogs came away with a 55-47 District 5-4A win on Tuesday in Jennings.
The Broncos trailed 36-28 heading into the final quarter and trailed by as much as 12 points after a basket by Aaron Perkins with 5:52 left in the game.
Jennings still led by 10 points with five minutes to go but the Broncos went on a 11-4 run led by Dylan Champagne to cut the lead to three points, 50-47, with 2:25 left in the game. Champagne scored six of his team-high 18 points. Quincy Chretien added nine points for the Broncos.
But the Broncos would go scoreless the rest of the game and were forced to foul. Jennings went 5-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game.
Sam Houston was the first to score when Champagne hit a shot in the lane eight seconds into the game but Jennings took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Donovan Thibodeaux.
The Broncos got within three, 9-6, after a putback by Carl Pete but would get no closer in the first half.
Thibodeaux finished with 15 points and Avery Capdeville had seven points.
Sam Houston will host No. 7 Washington Marion on Friday.
No. 2 Jennings 55, Lady Broncos 30
JENNINGS–The Sam Houston Lady Broncos held No. 2 Jennings to just two points in the second quarter but the Lady Bulldogs exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 55-30 win on Tuesday in Jennings.
The Lady Bulldogs led 18-7 behind eight points from forward Kendra Pete after the first quarter while shooting over 50 percent from the field. But in the second quarter they went just 1-for-16 while the Lady Broncos held them scoreless for six and a half minutes.
A free throw by Kim Kennedy with 12 second left in the first half pulled the Lady Broncos to within six-points, 20-14.
Jennings took advantage of 19 second half turnovers by the Lady Broncos to pull away as they went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter.
Sam Houston finished with a total of 33 turnovers in the game while Jennings had just 11.
“We have to be smarter,” Lady Broncos head coach Korey Arnold said. “We don’t consistently handle the pressure.
“We played better defense (in the second quarter) but we should have had a little more offense.”
Kennedy led Sam Houston with 13 points while Pete finished with a game-high 21 points for Jennings.
The Lady Broncos will return home on Friday to host the No. 9 Washington-Marion Lady Indians.
