Westlake, La. -

West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital recently hosted Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S., which stands for Fishing, Arts and Crafts, and Equestrian Skills. The camp is designed for special needs children, such as those with autism, spinabifida, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, visual deficits, speech or hearing impairments. Campers ages five through 12 can enjoy the activities in an atmosphere where children, not disabilities, count most.
On Friday, June 19, the children at the camp were treated to a visit by Molly the pony. She is the well-known wonderhorse who lives with a human prothesis on her front right leg. She made headlines after her rescue during Hurricane Katrina and her subsequent attack by a pitt bull which left her disabled. Molly’s fighting spirit and drive to survive and cope inspired her new owner to do whatever she could to enable Molly to live out her life and inspire others. Her visit to the camp was courtesy of monies donated from camper Zach Donahue, who donated money from his savings so that Molly could make the visit.
Zach was singled out Friday morning for a special visit with Molly and an award for his donation. He is the son of Glen Donahue of Moss Bluff and Angel Abercrombie, formerly of Moss Bluff but who currently resides in Ragley.
