The Sam Houston Lady Broncos picked up a quality win on Wednesday with a 6-3 victory over the playoff bound Notre Dame Lady Pios.
The Lady Broncos currently sit at the top of Class 4A according to the power rankings on kenramsey.com and Notre Dame ranks No. 5 as of Wednesday.
Sam Houston (23-4-1, 8-0) stumbled out of the gate allowing Notre Dame to take an early 2-0 lead.
Alex Boulet led off for the Lady Pios (23-8, 8-2) drawing a walk from the Lady Broncos’ Baylee Corbello and Taylor Boulet followed with a questionable double down the third baseline to bring home Alex Boulet for a 1-0 Notre Dame advantage.
Taylor Simon then put a ball in play to the Sam Houston right side of the infield to allow Taylor Boulet to score for the early Lady Pio lead.
Notre Dame senior pitcher Hannah Godeaux was able to hold the Lady Broncos scoreless until Kim Kennedy roped a single to left to score Brooke Rozas to put Sam Houston on the board.
The Lady Broncos kicked the offense into another gear in the fifth inning when they struck for five runs to take a 6-2 lead.
The first six batters for Sam Houston all picked up hits including a RBI single by Kennedy, a 2-RBI single by Brandi Reed, and a one-run double by Tori Lantz to take the lead for good.
“I think the first couple of innings we were down because the two runs they scored in the first inning,” said Lady Broncos’ head coach Beth Domingue. “We were putting the bat on the ball the whole time so I told them to just stay confident and things will start to fall for us, and they did.”
Notre Dame added a run in the seventh inning when Taylor Boulet hit an infield single to bring home Alex Boulet for the 6-2 Lady Broncos’ win.
After allowing two runs in the first inning, Corbello settled in to strike out the side in the second and third innings for a 13-strikeout performance allowing just two earned runs on four hits and four walks.
Godeaux took the loss for the Lady Pios allowing six runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Kennedy led all batters with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI’s and a run scored. Tori Lantz added a 2-for-3 effort with a double and an RBI.
Sam Houston honored their six seniors Pam Wainwright, Taylor Wood, Brandi Reed, Kim Kennedy, Kayla Hooper and Kelli Langley prior to the game.
