On Tuesday night, the Southwest Louisiana Christian Homeschool Athletic Club, also known as the Southwest Louisiana Knights and Lady Knights, held their Sports Awards Banquet at Moss Bluff Bible Church in Moss Bluff. Almost 200 people were in attendance, including 45 homeschooled athletes from around Southwest Louisiana (some from the Sulphur area), who participate in the various programs of the organization.
It was only four years ago that five area families started the group with boys basketball. Varsity girls basketball was added the following year, followed by co-ed varsity soccer. This year, varsity softball and baseball were added to the mix. The teams play in the west division of the Louisiana Christian School Athletic Association (LCSAA). Presently, around 31 families are involved in the local non-profit organization.
“We have been growing by word of mouth,” said Athletic Director Bill Wild at Tuesday night’s ceremonies.
“Just imagine where we will be four more years from now,” he added.
Wild spoke on the possibility of bringing in varsity football. He told the crowd that they are lined up to begin play in the fall if coaches can be found.
The group is a non-profit organization governed by a five member board. It is headed by an Athletic Director and currently counts five coaches and eight assistant coaches among its ranks, all volunteers. Although the majority of the athletes are homeschooled students from Calcasieu Parish, there are a few from Jeff Davis and Beauregard Parishes; but athletes are welcome from any parish in Southwest Louisiana.
“What we do out here is all for our kids,” said Wild. “We are dedicated to making a difference for them.”
