The Sam Houston Lady Broncos remained perfect in district play with a 3-0 win over the LaGrange Lady Gators on Thursday afternoon.
The match was never in question with the Lady Broncos winning 25-8, 25-8, and 25-11.
In the first game, Sam Houston (15-8, 3-0) started fast from the start taking an 11-1 lead. The Lady Gators (3-15, 0-3) couldn’t get a rally together and scored six of their eight points on Lady Bronco errors. Sam Houston wrapped up the game with Maddie Smith leading the way with three aces and a kill to win the game 25-8.
“We have to mentally stay in it and limit unforced errors,” Sam Houston head coach Rene Fontenot said on the first game. “It’s about making choices.”
The Lady Broncos were able to focus back in at the task at hand and took a 13-1 lead in the second game. The Lady Gators were able to break the Sam Houston serve once while tallying five points on Sam Houston errors. The Lady Broncos closed the game on a six-point rally to win 25-8 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third game, the Lady Gators took their first lead of the match with a 2-1 score. LaGrange wouldn’t have another lead in the match but tied the game two times. Sam Houston won the third game with Smith adding two aces and Pam Wainwright scoring two kills to take the game 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Fontenot said that one of the areas the Lady Broncos need to improve on is limiting unforced errors.
Smith led the Lady Broncos with nine kills and nine aces. Katie Dewitt had three blocks while scoring eight kills and an ace. Wainwright added seven kills and three aces. Kim Kennedy led Sam Houston in assists with 32 along with four aces and two digs.
The Lady Broncos will begin the second round of district next Monday when they travel to Opelousas to take on Beau Chene. Sam Houston will end the week when they host St. Louis on Thursday and travel to New Orleans on Friday to participate in the Newman Tournament.
“We are where we should be right now,” Fontenot said. “The true test will come in the next week when we are at Newman.”
