This is Sam Houston High Schools first year of Varsity Bowling. The team consists of nine members and none are seniors, which makes the outlook of the future very bright. Only two of the members, both freshman, had been bowling in a structured setting. There has been vast improvement throughout the year. Three members who weren’t bowling in a structured setting have shown vast improvement; all three of these bowlers, when practice began were struggling to break 100, but Colby Mock is currently averaging 157, bowled the teams first 600 series and has had 2 200 games during matches, after never having reached that plateau before; Tyler Turpin is averaging 152 and has bowled 3 200 games, with a team high of 232, after never having bowled a 200 before; and Justin Lebert with a 143 average did bowl a practice 200 game, but has been able to get as high as 193 in match play. All these three novices are underclassmen. The two bowlers with the highest averages
are freshmen: Andrew Carrell and Ty Newcomb. Andrew has had 2 200 games in match play and averages 171 and Ty leads the team with 4 200 games and a 175 average. Other members of the team who have also improved greatly, throughout the year and are all underclassmen are Gabriel Tarver, Dylan Youngblood, Matthew Baldwin and Jaimee McGruder. The team is coached by Tony Newcomb, who looks forward to continued improvement throughout the rest of this bowling year and in years to come, as these bowlers improve and share the fun that the team has had with their friends. The hope is to add many more bowlers to the team next year. Other areas teams that participate in Varsity bowling are Barbe, LaGrange and St Louis High Schools.
