For the second game in a row, the Westlake Lady Rams could not hold on to an early lead as they lost 46-31 to Sam Houston at the Cameron State Bank/Lake Charles Toyota Southwest Shootout at Barbe on Friday.
Westlake scored first on a shot by Jordyn Netty but Sam Houston tied it up two minutes later with a basket by Kim Kennedy.
The Lady Rams then went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with four points from Maya Tunwar and a three-pointer by Kylie Goodeaux. During that time, Sam Houston went 0-for-5.
But after a time out with 4:14 left in the opening quarter, Sam Houston started to turn the tables. With the help of 11 Westlake turnovers, Sam Houston went on a 14-0 run from 3:02 remaining in the first quarter to 55 seconds left in the second quarter.
"I thought that we came out a little lackadaisical on the first few possession," Sam Houston head coach Korey Arnold said. "I told them that Westlake lost a double overtime heartbreaker last night and either they are going to come out pumped up and ready or come out a little down.
"They (Westlake) definitely came out ready to play. They had a lot of confidence. I warned my kids of that but sometimes they don't listen very well. I had to call an early timeout and settle them down and I think we answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead at the end of the first quarter."
Friday's game was eerily similar to the Lady Rams 11-point halftime lead against Barbe on Thursday, which ended in a double overtime loss for Westlake.
"After that we fell apart," Westlake head coach Gloria Fontenot said. "We gave up. There is not much to say other than my team did not show up. I do not know who that was but it was not my team.
"We did not have any chemistry and we did not run our offenses. We need a leader and we need chemistry.”
Westlake got to within seven points, 23-16, midway through the third quarter but the Lady Broncos started to pull away.
Taylor Landry hit two shots near the end of the third quarter to give Sam Houston a 32-18 lead.
Westlake started to get into foul trouble late in the game with Goodeaux fouling out with three minutes left and Emily Dickerson and Tunwar picking up their fourth foul each shortly after that.
Kennedy led Sam Houston with a game-high 13 points and Haley Carrier had 12 points. Tunwar led Westlake with eight points.
Sam Houston finished the tournament with a 2-1 record with their lone loss coming on Wednesday in overtime against Sulphur.
The Lady Broncos will play six homes game this week starting on Monday at 5 p.m. against Barbe. They will play Marksville on Wednesday and will start play in the Rumble on the Bluff basketball tournament on Friday in Moss Bluff.
Westlake will return to action Tuesday at home against DeQuincy at 6 p.m. They will begin play in the Starks tournament on Thursday.
