At 10:35 Thursday morning, a state trooper (Troop D) observed a vehicle appearing to have an unrestrained driver and illegal window tint traveling on U.S. Hwy 171 near English Bayou. The trooper activated his lights to signal the vehicle to stop. The vehicle pulled into the Walmart parking lot on U.S. Hwy 171 and accelerated through the parking lot in an attempt to evade the state police unit. The trooper activated his audible signals and advised dispatch that he was in a pursuit. While traveling through the parking lot, the suspect's vehicle struck a Toyota Avalon and continued out of the lot.
The vehicle continued north on U.S. Hwy. 171 while being pursued by the trooper. The pursuit continued east on to Theriot Road. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office (CPSO) units and additional LSP units joined the pursuit as it continued in a circle on local roads in Moss Bluff. The units realized the subject, Leland Trotti, 25, of Moss Bluff, was making a circle in attempt to get to his residence. The pursuing units tightened the travel path of the suspect vehicle by blocking his previous routes. The pursuit continued in the same path in open fields and through residential property.
The pursuit terminated as the vehicle slid into a tree on his father's property at 552 Koonce Rd. The subject initially resisted arrest but was quickly taken into custody. It was determined that the 1996 Chevrolet truck he was driving was taken without permission.
Trotti was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center for failure to wear a seat belt, illegal window tint, driving under suspension, reckless operation of a vehicle, flight from an officer, hit and run driving, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest.
The pursuit lasted 14 minutes and no injuries were reported.
