On Thursday, February 19, Moss Bluff Senior Center, Calcasieu Council On Aging, celebrated this year’s Mardi Gras by holding, what has been labeled, “Its First Annual Mardi Gras Bash.” Since the center’s opening June 2006, the number of seniors visiting the center has risen to the point that the center would not hold the anticipated number of guests, so VFW Post 9933, was approached about using the VFW to house the event.
This turned out to be a wise decision, since over 200 costumed, excited seniors showed up to dine on gumbo, potato salad and cake. They danced to the music of French Bread, a local Cajun band, and were entertained by one of their peers, 86 year old Elma Portier, who played her scrub board for them.
This event was made possible due to the generosity of local merchants and organizations who came forward to give of their funds and time. The physical efforts of Moss Bluff seniors, who baked cakes, transported equipment, made potato salad, decorated and undecorated insured the success of this event. One loyal couple, Norris and Glenda Dyson, even raided their hen house and brought fresh eggs for the ladies to make their cakes and salad.
In a surprise, the center's first king and queen were named and crowned at the gala. Jim and Annie Boyette had no idea that they would bear the crown and cloak of royalty. Both honorees have given freely of their time and talents for every project and event held at the center.
Annie’s major contribution to the center is her talent as a gifted oil painting teacher to 18 grateful and adoring students.  Jim strutted the runway for the fashion show last spring and just played a role in the center’s successful Redneck Wedding.  He can also be called upon to direct traffic and haul equipment in his pick up truck!
After three hours of unstopping fun, music, and laughter, the happy group left their “First Annual Mardi Gras Bash” full of delicious food wonderful memories, Mardi Gras trinkets and door prizes.  From all indications, the Senior Center can expect them back again next year.
