The No. 3 Sam Houston Lady Broncos picked up a 17-0 victory in three innings over the No. 30 St. Michael’s Lady Warriors to cruise into the second round of the LHSAA Class 4A playoffs.

The Lady Broncos drew 14 walks from St. Michael’s pitcher Amanda Terrel.

Kayla Hooper led Sam Houston with a 2-for-2 day with two doubles and three RBI’s.

“I’m really happy for her,” Lady Broncos’ head coach Beth Domingue said. “Her confidence has been down a little bit. She needed that mentally, especially going into the next game.”

Brianna Granger (26-3) pitched three innings of shutout softball allowing only one hit and striking out seven Lady Warriors.

St. Michael’s Mallory Mayer broke up a no-hit bid for Granger with an infield single in the second inning.

Domingue said that she was happy to see her team play as one of the top teams in the state.

“I just wanted to make sure the girls came out and played their game,” said Domingue on the Lady Broncos performance.

Sam Houston will host District 4-4A rival Eunice in the second round of the playoffs on either Thursday or Friday.

NOTE: Of the six defensive outs recorded by St. Michael’s, four outs were due to the Lady Broncos leaving the base early.
