A town hall meeting for the half cent tax renewal in the City of Sulphur is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14, 6 p.m., Center Circle Recreational Building, 80 Center Circle, for Districts 4 and 5.
•WCCH Diabetes Support Group Meeting
The diabetes support group at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital meets the second Tuesday of each month in the hospital’s cafeteria conference room. •Brimstone Issues Call for Militaria (Deadline)
A military exhibit at Brimstone Museum is being planned for October. The museum is currently issuing a call for items to be placed on loan for the exhibit. Any military or war-related item, such as uniforms, medals, or photos, are welcome and will be returned after the exhibit closes. The deadline for submission is September 15. •Lake Charles Sail & Power Squadron-Gathering of Boats

•Register for Bon Ton 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run
Bon Ton 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run will be held on Saturday, September 18 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss, located at 4822 Carlyss Drive. Registration for the 5K is$20 if one pre-registers, and $25 on race day. Cost for registration for the 1 Mile Fun Run is $16 in advance, and $20 on race day. •WCCH Hosts Adolescent Classes for Girls
Between Us Girls, a class structured for young girls ages 9-12 and 13-17, and their mothers, will be held Saturday, September 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital’s Cafeteria Conference Room. Each age group will be presented with information regarding their particular stage of growth, including body changes, female anatomy, skin care, fitness, nutrition and hygiene. Mothers or guardians will also be provided with information and advice concerning their daughter’s stages of development, as well as common areas of concern.

•Grand Opening of Lakefront Promenade and Bord du Lac Marina
The City of Lake Charles is proud to announce the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Lakefront Promenade and Bord du Lac Marina. The public is encouraged to attend this historic event on Saturday, September 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The dedication ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Louisiana Landing located at the north end of the seawall. Attendees will then walk the length of the new Promenade to the entrance of the Bord du Lac Marina for a christening and ribbon cutting. From 5:30 to 9 p.m. free activities along the Promenade will include street performers such as balloon clowns, face painters, mimes, caricaturists, musicians, magicians, etc. J&R Carriages will give free carriage rides along Bord du Lac Drive. Food and beverage vendors will also be on site. The Promenade provides an enhanced lakefront edge which boasts decorative lighting, shaded seating structures, land forms and landscaping, a widened walkway of special paving and an interactive fountain. Positioned at the south end of the seawall, the Marina consists of 42 short term slips with floating docks, 38 of which are equipped with power and water. This momentous occasion represents a preview of the many memorable activities to come. The new lakefront enhancements offer a premier destination for residents and tourists alike. •CCOA Meals On Wheels Prom
Plans are underway for the second annual Meals On Wheels Prom to be held on Saturday, September 18 at the Civic Center. The Calcasieu Council on Aging announces that the hours of festivity are from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the afternoon with a sit down dinner served at 5 p.m. for all attendees. This gala is to furnish an afternoon of fun and frolic for the elderly, but the reason for the event is to call attention to the critical need for funds to feed the parish’s homebound elderly. The need is rising by the day, and funds are not available to meet that need. Everyone is urged to attend and support this worthy cause. Tickets are only $5, which will pay for the entire afternoon, and may be purchased from any of the Council on Aging centers or by calling Nancy Fuller at 217-0500 at the Moss Bluff Senior Center, Council on Aging.

•CPSO Senior Citizen Fishing Derby
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is hosting the Senior Citizen Fishing Derby at the CPSO pond on Friday, September 24 from 7 to 11 a.m. The pond is located at 5400 E. Broad St. Seniors must be 55 years old or older to participate. Call 263-4563 for more information.
•Benefit for Peter Weldon
A benefit raffle will be held for cancer survivor Peter Weldon, 16, former Sulphur High student. The drawing, which will be held on September 24, is for ongoing medical expenses. Tickets are $1 each and there are three different framed prints available to win. They include:
-Prize #1 is ‘Ducks in Flight’
-Prize #2 is ‘Tails from the Blind’
-Prize #3 is ‘Rainbow Trout’
The prints are on display at the Multipurpose/Managan Center on Sampson Street in Westlake and were donated by Westlake Ducks Unlimited.

•SWLA Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children
The SWLA Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children is hosting a balloon release on September 25 at 2 p.m. in observance of National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. The event will be held at the Civic Center Seawall directly behind the Civic Center. All family, friends, and survivors of murder victims are invited to attend and bring a picture of your loved one. •Hart Eye Center Free Eye Screenings
Hart Eye Center of Lake Charles will hold free eye screenings on September 11 and 25 to help people protect their vision from the damaging effects of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration are serious eye diseases that cannot only damage vision, but if left undetected or untreated, each has the potential to cause blindness. •Cayenne Kayak Challenge
The Pelican Paddlers Club of Southwest Louisiana announces the 4th Annual Cayenne Kayak Challenge. This event will be held on Saturday September 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lake Charles north beach. Anyone interested in getting involved in canoe or kayak sports is invited. The idea is to bring together people who enjoy canoe, kayak, and pirogue paddling introducing the sport to those who want to learn more or give it a try. The Cayenne Challenge will include a Cardboard Kayak Race, a Kayak Skills Relay Race and a paddle around the lake. Food, fun and music will be offered as well. A variety of boats will be available for participants to experience. •Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up Benefit Fishing Tourney
Friends, family and fishermen are invited to converge on Choupique Bayou for the first ever “Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up.” The benefit fishing event will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 and all proceeds will assist with medical expenses incurred during his year-long battle with cancer.
The one day fishing tournament will begin at sunrise with a weigh-in deadline of 4 p.m. Early entry registration forms are now being accepted and may be obtained online at www.facebook.com/pages/the-buddy-westlund-memorial-redfish-round-up/141983522488324. •ConocoPhillips Employees Golf Scramble
ConocoPhillips will sponsor their second annual Employees Golf Scramble on September 25, teeing off at 1 p.m. at the National Golf Club of Louisiana in Westlake. The Scramble is dedicated to the memory of Gerald “Wash” Washington with all proceeds going to the Southwest Louisiana United Way.
Sponsorships are available starting at $100 for a Tee Box Sign, $550 for a Gold Team Sponsorship, $1,000 and up for a Corporate Sponsorship. NISSAN will again serve as the Hole-in-One prize sponsor. The entry fee is $400 per team which includes a free mulligan and the field is limited to the first 25 paid teams. Prizes will be awarded for the first and second place teams in both the first and second flight, as well as prizes for a Hole-in-One, Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive, and Longest Putt. •VFW 8107 Selling Barbecue Lunches
The VFW 8107 and Auxiliary will be selling barbecue lunches on September 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW located at 1235 E. Napoleon Street in Sulphur. The cost of the meal is $6 and includes your choice of pork streak or 1/2 chicken, potato salad, baked beans, bread, and cake. •Sulphur High School Homecoming Parade
For those wanting to show their TOR Pride, your opportunity in just right around the corner. SHS’s Homecoming Parade will be held on Friday, October 1 this year. The line-up will be on Ash Street, right next to the track, starting at 1 p.m. Judging of the floats will take place at 1:30 p.m. and the parade kicks off at 2 p.m. The parade will go west on Ash Street then south on S. Ruth Street (behind the courthouse) to Cypress Street, then east on Cypress Street ending at W.W. Lewis Middle School. Entry forms can be picked up at Sulphur High School. The entry fee is $10 per float and must be mailed or dropped off at SHS. Please mail your fee to: Attn. Kristin Brooks, 100 Sycamore St., Sulphur, LA 70663. •SHS Class of 1980 Reunion
The Sulphur High School Class of 1980 has started preparations for its 30th class reunion celebration October 1 to October 3, 2010. They are seeking current information on their classmates. You are asked to submit your information (mailing address, email address, phone numbers) to Allison Andreyk Kullenberg either via email (lsudiva85@yahoo.com) or phone 972-729-5465. They have established a Facebook alumni group “Sulphur High School (SHS) Class of 1980 - Louisiana.” Organizers are asking all friends, family and relatives to help in spreading the word to any classmate who might have moved out of the area.

OCTOBER 9
•Pumpkin Patch Pumpkins Arrive
The church grounds of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will once again be covered with big orange pumpkins. The pumpkins are scheduled to arrive on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 9 a.m. It is always so much fun to unload the pumpkins, and the church would appreciate any help in doing so. If anyone is interested in helping them, please feel free to join them that morning. There will be service certificates for members of groups from the local schools, scouting groups, etc.
The Pumpkin Patch will be open until October 31, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays, and 12 noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. School classes, daycare facilities and grandparents bring children to Pumpkin Patch Storytime, which is conducted by a former kindergarten teacher. There are two classes on 10 different days. Storytime is a gift to the children of the area from the church. Call the church office (625-4288) to schedule a visit. Picnics can be held in the Pavilion if arrangements are made beforehand. Those with a sweet tooth can purchase delicious pumpkin bread made by members of the church. The proceeds from the sale of pumpkins, gourds, and pumpkin bread fund Holy Trinity’s outreach projects, such as providing Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, donations to mission trips, etc. There are wonderful locations in the Patch for photo taking, along with free games for the children to enjoy. Make sure you plan a trip to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church’s Pumpkin Patch located at 1700 Maplewood Drive in Sulphur.
•Swinging Rebels Square Dance Club Fall Festival
The Swinging Rebels will hold a Fall Festival on Saturday, October 9, starting at 7 p.m., 809 Mulberry Street, Westlake. Early rounds will be from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the cuers will be Mark and Pam Prow from Seabrook, Texas. Squares will be from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with Stu Ringer of Houston as the caller. •Animal Rescue Groups Event
Area animal rescue groups invite the public to join them for the Fall "2nd Chance at Love" National Adoption weekend, October 10 through October 12, at Pet Smart in Lake Charles. There will be many wonderful dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens available for adoption. All are anxiously awaiting a forever home.
The dogs and puppies are heartworm free, have been spayed or neutered, and are current on all vaccinations. The cats and kittens have been tested and found negative for feline lukemia, aids, and heartworms, have been spayed or neutered, and are current on all vaccinations. Can't adopt? Unable to foster? Not to worry, there will be volunteers on-hand to explain the many other ways to help. The LAPAW Animal Rescue and T.N.R. group will be tempting your tastebuds with ice cold lemonade and delicious homemade sweets. Hobo Hotel and the Humane Society have teamed up to serve cokes and hot dogs.
Please join them for a rewarding experience.

•Pumpkin Patch Storytime again
Beginning the morning of October 14, Frances Wynn, retired kindergarten teacher, will present stories, songs and games at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Pumpkin Patch on Maplewood Drive.
All Kindergarten and Pre-K classes, as well as any nursery schools or day cares are invited to bring their groups free of charge.
Groups are also encouraged to plan a picnic under the pavilion.
