•CNN’s ‘Toxic Towns’ to be Broadcast
Join M.E.A.N. (Mossville Environmental Action Now) and see the CNN Special Report on “Toxic Towns” across the United States, one of which is Mossville. The big screen viewing will be held at the Rigmaiden Recreational Center located at 3825 Old Spanish Trail in Mossville on June 2 at 7 p.m. Question and comments will immediately follow the showing. Part II of the series will air on June 3 at 7 p.m. on CNN. Refreshments are available and will include a snack pack of hot dog, chips and a drink for $3.75.

•Downtown at Sundown
The City of Lake Charles and the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana announce the line up for the twelfth annual Downtown at Sundown concert series. The event takes place at the Downtown Merchants’ parking lot at the corners of Ryan and Broad streets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on four consecutive Fridays. The free shows feature a variety of music from local and regional bands. Also offered are food and beverage booths, table top galleries, art sales and activities for kids.

•Poker Run for B.A.A.K.
On June 5 the 2nd annual Poker Run for B.A.A.K. (Battered and Abused Kids of Southwest Louisiana) will be held with registration from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at The Spot Sports Bar & Grill located at 5402 Common Street in Lake Charles. The last bike out is at 9:30 a.m. and the last bike in is at 3:30 p.m. Stops along the way include Mary’s Lounge, Shorty’s Ice House, B&B Bar, He’s Not Here, Dakota’s, Neighborhood Bar, and the last stop The Spot Sports Bar & Grill. There will be barbecue dinners, live and silent auctions, 50/50 pot, and music. Cost of the run is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger. •Kid Power - Children’s Weight Loss Program
Kid Power of Southwest Louisiana is an 8-week healthy nutrition and physical activity weight loss program uniquely designed for area children, ages 6 to 14. The program will take place this summer, June 5 through July 31. Throughout this 8-week period participants will be offered an array of physical fitness activity choices and healthy eating education seminars. To qualify for the program participants must be overweight and must go through a one-time health screening process which will include a height and weight check and health history questionnaire. The Kid Power health screening sessions are scheduled for April 19, April 26, May 3 and May 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Calcasieu Community Clinic, located at 550 East Sale Road. Cost of the program is $10 cash per child per household and $5 cash for each additional sibling. Payment is required at the time of the screening - cash only. •Speed Camp at Dynamic Dimensions
Dynamic Dimensions of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital will be offering an Speed and Agility Workshop for athletes age 9 through 18 at their fitness centers in Sulphur and Moss Bluff. The workshop will be conducted by trainers with over 25 years of combined experience in fitness and athletics. The goal of the program is to help young athletes improve their performance in whatever sport in which they participate. The trainers will work with each athlete to identify strengths and weaknesses, and help them develop a training program for improvement. Each session will include speed and agility drills and educational information about the importance of training and conditioning for both performance and injury prevention. The workshop will take place from June 7 through June 11 at Dynamic Dimensions in Sulphur, and from June 14 through June 18 at the Moss Bluff location. The workshop is divided into two age groups, with ages 9 through 12 from 12 noon to 2 p.m.; and ages 13 through 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. The workshop cost is $75, and $50 for a second child from the same family. •Bikers on the Boudin Trail
The Kiwanis Club of Southwest Contraband is sponsoring the run on June 12 which will take riders to five stops in Southwest Louisiana to taste a little bit of local flavor in boudin. All proceeds go to the Kiwanis Club to distribute to organizations and programs such as Key Club, Bring Up Grades, Golden Rule awards, Christmas sponsorship, Community Baby Shower, Read Around the World, and many more. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Lakeshore Drive in Lake Charles. Stops along the way include Rabideaux’s Sausage Kitchen in Iowa, Petro’s Deli in Moss Bluff, Comeaux’s Cajun Gold in DeQuincy, The Sausage Link in Sulphur, and the final stop, The Frosty Factory in Lake Charles. •Rabies Vaccination Clinics
The Office of Animal Services will be offering two rabies clinics in an effort to prevent the spread of Rabies Infection. Calcasieu Parish and other municipal ordinances require that all dogs and cats over the age of three months be vaccinated for rabies and licensed. The clinics will offer rabies vaccinations to pet owners at a reduced cost. Vaccination and licensing rates for spay/neutered animals is $8. Unaltered pets will cost $10. The public is encouraged to bring their pet’s license from last year, as well as correct change to pay to ensure a short wait time. All dogs will need to be on a leash and cats must be in a portable kennel. Vendors will also be on-hand at the clinics showcasing animal-related products; a local licensed pet dog trainer will be there to answer questions. Local rescue organizations have been invited to answer questions about their groups.

Once a pet is vaccinated by a licensed Louisiana Veterinarian, and licensed in Calcasieu Parish, the law requires pets to wear the license tag both in all areas of the Parish. •Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S.
Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S., a camp for special needs children ages five through twelve, will be held June 14-18 at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital’s Genesis Therapeutic Riding Center. Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon each day at the center on 886 Landry Lane in Sulphur. Cost to attend is $75. The camp is an annual event provided by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Children with various disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, visual deficits, speech or hearing impairments, and others are eligible to attend. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including horseback riding, fishing, arts and crafts. Sasol is now accepting applications for its 14th Annual Summer Teacher Institute. The institute will take place from Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25. Participating educators will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of employment opportunities with area industry and how to best prepare students for these jobs. The Summer Teacher Institute is available to instructors of all disciplines and grade levels with special preference given to Junior and Senior High Science, Chemistry and Math teachers. Those participating will receive 25 continuing education credits, a $25 stipend per day and will have breakfast and lunch provided. •Teen Dances at VFW
The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary 8107, located at 1235 E. Napoleon Street in Sulphur will sponsor Teen Dances every Wednesday night from 8 until 11 p.m. all summer from June 2, 2010 until the Wednesday night before school begins. Cost is $6. Teens will be required to sign in and sign out. Dress and behavior codes are enforced. Security will be on duty and there will be plenty of chaperons as well.
