•‘To the Drawing Board’ opens at Henning Cultural Center
The Henning Cultural Center is proud to announce a new exhibit entitled “To the Drawing Board.” This display features six artists from Lake Charles and Sulphur. On the walls of the gallery, Oran Parker, Erik Jessen, Johnny Thomas, Johnny Segura, Darren Hanks, and Eric Manuel will show you their step-by-step processes showing how their art is created. From the original sketch to the finished product, this exhibit shows you how each artist uses their pencil, paint, or markers, to express an idea.

•CHRISTUS St. Patrick To Host Two Free Seminars
CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital will host two free separate seminars on health issues for men and women on September 2 at the L’Auberge du Lac Conference Center. The women’s seminar will begin at 12 noon and a light lunch will be provided. Lee J. Monlezun, M.D. will share the latest information on women’s health issues and important screenings for women. The men’s seminar will begin at 6 p.m. and refreshments will be provided. Farjaad Siddiq, M.D. will offer information about important screenings for men of all ages as well as treatment options for prostate cancer. Both seminars will feature information on the minimally invasive da Vinci Surgical System for hysterectomy and prostate cancer surgery. •Healthcare 101 Event for Artists And Musicians
The Louisiana Campaign For Tobacco-Free Living in partnership with the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation-Healthcare Initiative, Stellar Beans and the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA are excited to announce Healthcare 101-a free healthcare workshop. Healthcare 101 will be held on Wednesday, September 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Stellar Beans, located at 319 Broad Street in downtown Lake Charles. The workshop will educate uninsured artists, musicians and cultural economy workers about the free healthcare options available to them in the community. There will also be free food, drinks and music as well as free healthcare services like massage therapy, acupuncture, healthcare screenings and healthcare consultations from Tobacco-Free Living, Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation-Healthcare Initiative, the SWLA Center for Health Services and the Calcasieu Medical Reserve Corps. •The Children’s Theatre Company Acting Classes Underway
Acting classes began yesterday for the Children’s Theatre Company from 4 to 6 p.m. No experience is necessary but enrollment in classes is required. •City of Sulphur's Stars and Stripes in the Park event
“Stars and Stripes in the Park” celebrates all things that the Sulphur community believes in, “Faith, Family and Community”. The event will take place Saturday, September 11, on the grounds of Heritage Square and the Henning Cultural Center, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
Entertainment will be provided by the popular party band “Boomerang.” This local band always promises a “high-intensity” performance, as all musicians perform in wild, zany costumes from the 70’s and play everyone’s favorite hits from the past. Several hundred classic cars are expected to be at the event, along with Sulphur’s legendary monster truck, “Southern Sunshine.” The Henning Cultural Center will be open for all to view the museum’s latest art exhibit “The Drawing Board.” For more information, please call Sulphur City Hall, at 527-4500.
•2nd Annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk
The Suicide Prevention and Intervention Coalition for Youth (S.P.I.C.Y.) will sponsor the 2nd annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk, which will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Heritage Square Pavilion, next to the Henning House, located at 1015 Ruth St. in Sulphur. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. with closing ceremonies to follow. The walk is a partnership with coalition members, community members, survivors, concerned individuals and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. People or teams interested participating in the walk can register in advance by going to www.outofthedarkness.org or they may register at the site on Saturday, September 11, 2010.
The SPICY Coalition realizes the value of survivors of suicide and the vital role that they can play in education, referral and support. The Coalition would like to encourage all survivors and community members to consider coming out to support this worthwhile cause. There is also a 24 hour toll-free crisis hotline that links callers to nearby crisis support centers. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-723-TALK (8255), or www.suicidepreventionlifelind.org and the lifeline accepts calls from non-English speakers.

•Grand Opening of Lakefront Promenade and Bord du Lac Marina
The City of Lake Charles is proud to announce the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Lakefront Promenade and Bord du Lac Marina. The public is encouraged to attend this historic event on Saturday, September 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The dedication ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Louisiana Landing located at the north end of the seawall. Attendees will then walk the length of the new Promenade to the entrance of the Bord du Lac Marina for a christening and ribbon cutting. From 5:30 to 9 p.m. free activities along the Promenade will include street performers such as balloon clowns, face painters, mimes, caricaturists, musicians, magicians, etc. J&R Carriages will give free carriage rides along Bord du Lac Drive. Food and beverage vendors will also be on site. The Promenade provides an enhanced lakefront edge which boasts decorative lighting, shaded seating structures, land forms and landscaping, a widened walkway of special paving and an interactive fountain. Positioned at the south end of the seawall, the Marina consists of 42 short term slips with floating docks, 38 of which are equipped with power and water. This momentous occasion represents a preview of the many memorable activities to come. The new lakefront enhancements offer a premier destination for residents and tourists alike. •CCOA Meals On Wheels Prom
Plans are underway for the second annual Meals On Wheels Prom to be held on Saturday, September 18 at the Civic Center. The Calcasieu Council on Aging announces that the hours of festivity are from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the afternoon with a sit down dinner served at 5 p.m. for all attendees. This gala is to furnish an afternoon of fun and frolic for the elderly, but the reason for the event is to call attention to the critical need for funds to feed the parish’s homebound elderly. The need is rising by the day, and funds are not available to meet that need. Everyone is urged to attend and support this worthy cause. Tickets are only $5, which will pay for the entire afternoon, and may be purchased from any of the Council on Aging centers or by calling Nancy Fuller at 217-0500 at the Moss Bluff Senior Center, Council on Aging.

•SWLA Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children
The SWLA Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children is hosting a balloon release on September 25 at 6 p.m. in observance of National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. The event will be held at the Civic Center Seawall directly behind the Civic Center. All family, friends, and survivors of murder victims are invited to attend and bring a picture of your loved one. •Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up Benefit Fishing Tourney
Friends, family and fishermen are invited to converge on Choupique Bayou for the first ever “Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up.” The benefit fishing event will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 and all proceeds will assist with medical expenses incurred during his year-long battle with cancer.

•ConocoPhillips Employees Golf Scramble
ConocoPhillips will sponsor their second annual Employees Golf Scramble on September 25, teeing off at 1 p.m. at the National Golf Club of Louisiana in Westlake. The Scramble is dedicated to the memory of Gerald “Wash” Washington with all proceeds going to the Southwest Louisiana United Way.
Sponsorships are available starting at $100 for a Tee Box Sign, $550 for a Gold Team Sponsorship, $1,000 and up for a Corporate Sponsorship. NISSAN will again serve as the Hole-in-One prize sponsor. The entry fee is $400 per team which includes a free mulligan and the field is limited to the first 25 paid teams. •Sulphur High School Homecoming Parade
For those wanting to show their TOR Pride, your opportunity in just right around the corner. SHS’s Homecoming Parade will be held on Friday, October 1 this year. The line-up will be on Ash Street, right next to the track, starting at 1 p.m. Judging of the floats will take place at 1:30 p.m. and the parade kicks off at 2 p.m. The parade will go west on Ash Street then south on S. Ruth Street (behind the courthouse) to Cypress Street, then east on Cypress Street ending at W.W. Lewis Middle School. Entry forms can be picked up at Sulphur High School. The Sulphur High School Class of 1980 has started preparations for its 30th class reunion celebration October 1 to October 3, 2010. They are seeking current information on their classmates. The Ancillary Committee at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings is soliciting donations for corner shelves for residents. The need is for 150 units. The committee is attempting to place corner shelves for each veteran in his room at the Jennings Veterans Home for pictures, etc. These corner shelves will be permanent fixtures in the home.
