•Armed Forces Committee Meeting
The next scheduled meeting for the Sulphur Armed Forces Committee will be on Thursday, August 19, 6 p.m., at the Brimstone Museum. The meeting will feature guest speaker Sulphur Mayor Chris Duncan. He will talk with the group about expectations for the committee. The group will also continue their discussion on plans for the first Sulphur Veterans Day Celebration, to be held at the Pavilion on November 6.

•Miles Perret “Mobile Miles” Cancer Services
Miles Perret “Mobile Miles” Cancer Services visits Memorial Cancer Center
Cancer patients throughout southwest Louisiana are invited to visit the Miles Perret “Mobile Miles” Cancer Services’ mobile outreach program on Tuesday, August 24, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This mobile program operates from the Lake Charles Memorial Hospital campus at 1701 Oak Park Boulevard one-day-a-month providing free non-medical support and information for cancer patients throughout southwest Louisiana. The unit will be stationed in the Medical Office Building parking lot on 3rd Street, adjacent to Memorial’s Cancer Center. In addition to emotional and physical support services, “Mobile Miles” will bring medical supplies and equipment, nutritional supplements, wigs, prostheses and other resources to patients diagnosed with cancer at no charge regardless of age, financial circumstances, or type of cancer. No appointment is necessary, but a physician referral is required.

•First Annual Vinton Heritage Pageant
Vinton will have a pageant for boys and girls to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the town of Vinton. The pageant will be held Saturday, August 28, at the Vinton American Legion Post 208, 5461 Joe Courville Road. The age divisions for boys is 0-2 years and 3-5 years. The age divisions for girls is 0-11 months; 12-23 months; 2-3 years; 4-5 years; 6-8 years; 9-10 years; 11-12 years; 13-15 years; and 16-18 years. There will also be a Ms. Group. All entries made on or before August 1 are $40; after August 1, entries will be accepted until August 25 for $60. •Public invited to Round Dance Weekend
The Swinging Rebels Square Dance clubhouse, 809 Mulberry Street (Westlake), will be the site of the Louisiana Round Dance Teachers Association Phase II-IV Round Dance Weekend, August 28 to August 28. Cuers will come from all areas of the state and the public is invited to watch the action.

•Tax seminar for businesses
The Louisiana Department of Revenue offers a free seminar to help business operators understand sales tax and other important business issues. •Council on Aging Meals On Wheels Prom
Plans are underway for the second annual Meals On Wheels Prom to be held on Saturday, September 18 at the Civic Center. The Calcasieu Council on Aging announces that the hours of festivity are from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the afternoon with a sit down dinner served at 5 p.m. for all attendees. This gala is to furnish an afternoon of fun and frolic for the elderly, but the reason for the event is to call attention to the critical need for funds to feed the parish’s homebound elderly. The need is rising by the day, and funds are not available to meet that need. Everyone is urged to attend and support this worthy cause. Tickets are only $5, which will pay for the entire afternoon, and may be purchased from any of the Council on Aging centers or by calling Nancy Fuller at 217-0500 at the Moss Bluff Senior Center, Council on Aging.

•Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up Benefit fishing event
Friends, family and fishermen are invited to converge on Choupique Bayou for the first ever “Buddy Westlund Memorial Redfish Round-Up.” The benefit fishing event will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 and all proceeds will assist with medical expenses incurred during his year-long battle with cancer.
The one day fishing tournament will begin at sunrise with a weigh-in deadline of 4 p.m. Early entry registration forms are now being accepted and may be obtained online at www.facebook.com/pages/the-buddy-westlund-memorial-redfish-round-up/141983522488324. Registration fees are $25 per person and prizes will be awarded. Checks may be made payable to the Buddy Westlund Memorial Fund and mailed to 304 Chili Westlund Road, Sulphur, LA 70605. The Weigh-In Celebration and After party will be held at Westlund Landing at the Choupique Bayou Bridge, on Hwy. 27 South of Sulphur. •ConocoPhillips Employees Golf Scramble
ConocoPhillips will sponsor their second annual Employees Golf Scramble on September 25, teeing off at 1 p.m. at the National Golf Club of Louisiana in Westlake. The Scramble is dedicated to the memory of Gerald "Wash" Washington with all proceeds going to the Southwest Louisiana United Way.
Sponsorships are available starting at $100 for a Tee Box Sign, $550 for a Gold Team Sponsorship, $1,000 and up for a Corporate Sponsorship. NISSAN will again serve as the Hole-in-One prize sponsor. The entry fee is $400 per team which includes a free mulligan and the field is limited to the first 25 paid teams. Prizes will be awarded for the first and second place teams in both the first and second flight, as well as prizes for a Hole-in-One, Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive, and Longest Putt. Food sponsors will have special BBQ treats at several of the holes with a shrimp dinner at the end of the Scramble where awards will be presented. •SHS Class of 1980 Reunion
The Sulphur High School Class of 1980 has started preparations for its 30th class reunion celebration October 1 to October 3, 2010. They are seeking current information on their classmates. They have established a Facebook alumni group “Sulphur High School (SHS) Class of 1980 - Louisiana.” Organizers are asking all friends, family and relatives to help in spreading the word to any classmate who might have moved out of the area.

•Swinging Rebels Square Dance Club Fall Festival
The Swinging Rebels will hold a Fall Festival on Saturday, October 9, starting at 7 p.m., 809 Mulberry Street, Westlake. Early rounds will be from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the cuers will be Mark and Pam Prow from Seabrook, Texas. Squares will be from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with Stu Ringer of Houston as the caller. •Care Help - Life Skill Classes
Care Help of Sulphur offers free Life Skill Classes taught by well known job educator, Carol Pettyjohn. Ms. Pettyjohn not only helps you with the necessities of preparing for a new job, but the classes also encourage students to gain the confidence needed for the job search process. Classes are free and open to all regardless of income. The purpose of these classes is to prepare job seekers by finding out what skills they already have, important job interviewing tips, how to create a resumé, and how to budget money. The location for the classes is 200 N. Huntington St. in the Social Service waiting room, enter through the double doors on south side of building. Classes are from 9 to 10 a.m. and seating is limited so please call to reserve a spot at 528-2273. Classes are every second Friday of each month.

•Corner Shelves for Veterans Home in Jennings
The Ancillary Committee at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings is soliciting donations for corner shelves for residents. The need is for 150 units. The committee is attempting to place corner shelves for each veteran in his room at the Jennings Veterans Home for pictures, etc. These corner shelves will be permanent fixtures in the home. The cost of each unit is $50.
A small commemorative plaque will be attached to the bottom of the unit noting one of the following: 1) In Memory of ____ 2) Donated by ____, 3) In Honor of ____.
