OCTOBER 13
•Sulphur AARP Meeting
Tuesday, October 13 the Sulphur AARP Chapter 1983 will hold its regular meeting at 2 p.m. at the Sulphur Senior Center, 601 Maple Street. The speaker will be John F. DeRosier, District Attorney. Executive board meets at 1 p.m. For more information, call Grace Savoie at 527-6300.

OCTOBER 13 through NOVEMBER 17
•Computer Classes in Cameron
The Cameron Parish Adult Education program is offering beginning computer classes. Adults in the area who would like to learn how to use Microsoft Word may enroll.  Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The classes will be held beginning on October 13, extending through November 17. Refreshments will be provided. Registration is required to participate in the program. OCTOBER 15
•Maplewood Middle’s ‘Music with a Mission’
The Maplewood Middle School Band Program presents ‘Music with a mission’ on Thursday, October 15, 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) at the W.W. Lewis school auditorium. Come enjoy an evening of great music for a great cause. This concert will feature regionally and nationally recognized musicians James Bill, Chester Daigle, Jay Ecker, Tim McMillen, Huber “Mickey” Smith, Kevin Stone and Eric Sylvester, just to name a few.  The cost is $1 for general admission and seating is limited. So, arrive early. It promises to be an event to remember.

OCTOBER 16
•SHS Boys Soccer Needs Your Support
The 2nd Annual SHS Boys Soccer Tournament is right around the corner on Friday Oct. 16 at the Bayou Oaks Country Club. Please consider joining in for some golfing fun. These boys really need your help.There are three teams so far and 14 are needed to make this a success for the boys. It is $300 per team with a four-man scramble. Entry fee includes carts, lunch at the Clubhouse, and lots of awards and prizes. For more information contact Ellis Hassien at 540-0494. Area businesses are also being asked to donate for Hole Sponsors. The Hole sponsorship is $200 for a first time sign (to cover the cost of the sign) and $100 each year there after. •Chamber SWLA Golf Tourney
You can register your team or check out the Chamber’s exciting sponsorships for the 2009 Chamber SWLA Golf Tournament. The event will happen on October 16, 2009, at National Golf Course of Louisiana in Westlake. The start times are 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Early entry fee is $500 per four player team, and late fee entry is $550 per four player team. Contact Dianne Dronet via email at ddronet@allianceswla.org

OCTOBER 16, 30
•VFW Dances
VFW Post 8107, on E. Napoleon Street, will hold a dance on October 16, and 30. Music provided by Butch Menard and Mike Dowers. The dance will be held from 8 p.m. until midnight. Cost is $7 per person.

OCTOBER 17
•Rouge et Blanc
Rouge et Blanc, the area’s largest wine and food tasting event, will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 17, on the grounds of the 1911 Cultural Center and the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse. Ryan Street will be blocked off between the two buildings. 
Almost 200 fine wines will be available for tasting and will be paired with a wide variety of food from 24 restaurants. The event is presented by the Lake Charles Downtown Development Authority and the McNeese State University Foundation. All proceeds benefit the McNeese Banners Cultural Series. People will be able to order the wines served at the event and 10 percent of the wine sales will also be donated to the Banners Series.

•Tanya Abshire Benefit
The Gulf Coast Fisheries Cooperative and Wildflower Community Development Center will be sponsoring a benefit for Mrs. Tanya Abshire on October 17 for cost associated with brain surgery. •6th Annual Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer 3K
The walk will take place on October 17 starting at the Lake Charles Civic Center Outdoor Theatre. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the ceremony/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $15 per adult and $10 per child. There will be door prizes, refreshments, and entertainment. •BBQ Dinners at VFW Post 8107
VFW Post 8107 will be selling barbecue dinners on October 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinners include one-half chicken or pork steak, potato salad, baked beans, cake and bread. All of this for only $6. Deliveries can be made of five or more. The VFW is located at 1325 E.(Hwy 90) Napoleon Street. Phone 527-7104, 527-0246, 287-4597, or 527-0075. OCTOBER 24
•VFW and AUX 8107 Canned Good Drive
VFW and Aux 8107 will be collecting canned goods and staples for local food pantries on October 24 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Hygiene products for local homeless shelters are appreciated as well. The Post home is located at 1235 E. Napoleon Street in Sulphur.
•CPAO Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop on Saturday, October 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CPSO Training Academy located at 3958 Mallard Cove Dr. Free class for women 18 years of age and over. Class size is limited so call 491-3850 now to register.
•Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk® 2009
The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Memory Walk® will take place on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles, LA. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.  Held annually in hundreds of communities around the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers and corporate and community leaders. They are on the move to end Alzheimer’s. OCTOBER 25
•Elvis for Autism Concert
Elvis for Autism, a benefit concert for Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana (ASSL) will be held at the L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort Event Center on Sunday, October 25, at 7 p.m. John Ieyoub, nationally acclaimed tribute artist, will be the featured performer along with an all-star cast headed by Chris Flowers and the Louisiana Express. Ieyoub has performed at private and corporate functions and at casinos across the state and in Mississippi. This will be Ieyoub’s last local performance. The event will benefit the newly opened Creole House for adults with autism, a dream that has become a reality. As of June 15, clients who need care twenty-four hours a day from specially trained attendants, are living in the home. The first of its kind in Louisiana, the home is modeled after the internationally acclaimed Autism Services in Huntington, West Virginia where several ASSL board members have been trained. Tax deductible tickets are $100 each and may be purchased at any First Federal branch or by calling ASSL at 337-436-5001.Corporate sponsors will be seated at tables for eight and all others will be general admission stadium seating.
Attendees must be at least 21 years of age.

•VFW Exceptional Citizens Dance

•VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for Grades 6, 7, and 8 consisting of 300 typed words entitled ”When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heros?“ One winner from each school will be sent for district judging. The deadline for entry is November 1, 2009. Please put name of student and school on reverse of entry. Voice Of Democracy Contest is open to Grades 9 through 12. Submit a good quality taped speech no longer than five minutes with a written copy of speech included. The deadline is November 1, 2009. One winner from each school sent for district Judging. NOVEMBER 15
•VFW Americanism Contest
Sulphur VFW Post 8107 and Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the annual VFW Americanism Contest. All students in the public, private and homebound sectors in Sulphur, Carlyss, Westlake, Hackberry, and Johnson Bayou may enter through November 15, 2009. The Americanism Contest consists of the following categories and age groups: Kindergarten - Coloring of American Flag furnished by Post; Grades 1 and 2 - Drawing and coloring of American Flag, pay attention to stripe colors; Grades 3 and 4 - Drawing of a Historical Event (not a ship or plane); Grades 5 and 6 - Essay 300 to 400 words titled “ How  I Show My Patriotism On Memorial Day.” Please put name and school on reverse of entry. •Imaginary Invalid
Set in 1939 Calcasieu Parish, embrace Cajun humor as an Acadian farmer has his life turned upside down while he deals with his imaginary illness, new wife and love-struck daughter. Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) will be offering a Sports Injury Clinic for high school athletes every Saturday morning beginning August 29.  The Sports Injury Clinic will be open from 8 to 10 a.m. at CFO’s new Lake Charles office, located at 1747 Imperial Blvd. (just off Nelson, 1/2 mile South of Country Club). CFO’s staff of orthopaedic and sports medicine physicians and support staff have extensive experience in working with local and national high school, college and professional athletes.  Walk-in patients with sports injuries are accepted and no appointment is needed.
