•BBQ Dinners at VFW Post 8107
VFW Post 8107 will be selling barbecue dinners on October 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinners include one-half chicken or pork steak, potato salad, baked beans, cake and bread. •Gigantic Garage Sale
On October 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Calcasieu Parish Animal Coalition-4 Paws Society, Hobo Hotel, SWLA Humane Society, and Lake Area Animal Hospital will combine their considerable forces and host a huge multi-family and vendor garage sale. Offerings will include appliances, furniture, household goods, tools, decorative items, clothing, and lots more. There will also be baked goods for sale as well as pets.

The location for this event is 465 Hardy Road in Carlyss which is south of Sulphur, LA. Take exit 20 off I-10 then take Hwy 27 south. Turn left at the third light onto Hwy. 108, then take a right onto S. Boudoin Road. Take a right onto Hardy Road. The garage sale will be at the end of the road on eight acres. An adoption application, vet references, and home visit are required for adoptions.
•VFW and AUX 8107 Canned Good Drive
VFW and Aux 8107 will be collecting canned goods and staples for local food pantries on October 24 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Hygiene products for local homeless shelters are appreciated as well. The Post home is located at 1235 E. Napoleon Street in Sulphur.
•CPSO Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop on Saturday, October 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CPSO Training Academy located at 3958 Mallard Cove Dr. Free class for women 18 years of age and over. •Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk® 2009
The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Memory Walk® will take place on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles, LA. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. Held annually in hundreds of communities around the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers and corporate and community leaders. They are on the move to end Alzheimer’s. •Elvis for Autism Concert
Elvis for Autism, a benefit concert for Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana (ASSL) will be held at the L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort Event Center on Sunday, October 25, at 7 p.m. John Ieyoub, nationally acclaimed tribute artist, will be the featured performer along with an all-star cast headed by Chris Flowers and the Louisiana Express. Ieyoub has performed at private and corporate functions and at casinos across the state and in Mississippi. This will be Ieyoub’s last local performance. The event will benefit the newly opened Creole House for adults with autism, a dream that has become a reality. As of June 15, clients who need care twenty-four hours a day from specially trained attendants, are living in the home. The first of its kind in Louisiana, the home is modeled after the internationally acclaimed Autism Services in Huntington, West Virginia where several ASSL board members have been trained. Tax deductible tickets are $100 each and may be purchased at any First Federal branch or by calling ASSL at 337-436-5001.Corporate sponsors will be seated at tables for eight and all others will be general admission stadium seating.

The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for Grades 6, 7, and 8 consisting of 300 typed words entitled ”When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heros?“ One winner from each school will be sent for district judging. The deadline for entry is November 1, 2009. Please put name of student and school on reverse of entry. Voice Of Democracy Contest is open to Grades 9 through 12. •WCCH Hosts Seminar on Managing Diabetes
A free seminar on diabetes management sponsored by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10 at Dynamic Dimensions in Sulphur. Featured speakers and topics for the seminar include: Kelly Fuqua, MD, “Complications of Diabetes” and Tyson Green, DPM, “Put Your Feet First.” A cooking demonstration will also be provided by Leslie Petross, registered dietitian. A variety of vendors will be on hand to provide information, including the Home Health Agency of WCCH, the Wound Healing Center of WCCH, Hanger Prosthetics, The Eye Clinic and many others. •Westlake Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Celebration slated
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., American Legion Post 407 and the West Cal Kiwanis Club will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving celebration for all area senior citizens. The event will be at the American Legion Post 407 home on 912 John Stine Road. There will be dancing, door prizes, and wonderful food, plus music by Earl LaPointe. Sulphur VFW Post 8107 and Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the annual VFW Americanism Contest. All students in the public, private and homebound sectors in Sulphur, Carlyss, Westlake, Hackberry, and Johnson Bayou may enter through November 15, 2009. The Americanism Contest consists of the following categories and age groups: Kindergarten - Coloring of American Flag furnished by Post; Grades 1 and 2 - Drawing and coloring of American Flag, pay attention to stripe colors; Grades 3 and 4 - Drawing of a Historical Event (not a ship or plane); Grades 5 and 6 - Essay 300 to 400 words titled “ How I Show My Patriotism On Memorial Day.” Please put name and school on reverse of entry. •Pumpkin Patch
The church grounds of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will once again be covered with big orange pumpkins grown in and around the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. The Pumpkin Patch makes a wonderland for the children to explore, see, smell and touch. School classes, daycare facilities and grandparents bring children to Pumpkin Patch Storytime. It is conducted by a former kindergarten teacher wearing a costume. There will be two classes on 10 different days. The Storytime is a gift to the children of the area from the church. Call the church office (625-4288) to schedule a visit. Picnics can be held in the Pavilion if arrangements are made beforehand. Those with a sweet tooth can purchase delicious pumpkin bread made by members of the church. Everyone is welcome at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Pumpkin Patch at 1700 Maplewood Drive in Sulphur. The Pumpkin Patch will continue through Halloween.

Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) will be offering a Sports Injury Clinic for high school athletes every Saturday morning beginning August 29. The Sports Injury Clinic will be open from 8 to 10 a.m. at CFO’s new Lake Charles office, located at 1747 Imperial Blvd. (just off Nelson, 1/2 mile South of Country Club). CFO’s staff of orthopaedic and sports medicine physicians and support staff have extensive experience in working with local and national high school, college and professional athletes. Walk-in patients with sports injuries are accepted and no appointment is needed.
