•BBQ Dinners at VFW Post 8107
VFW Post 8107 will be selling barbecue dinners on October 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Dinners include one-half chicken or pork steak, potato salad, baked beans, cake and bread. All of this for only $6. Deliveries can be made of five or more. The VFW is located at 1325 E.(Hwy 90) Napoleon Street. Phone 527-0425, 297-4597, or 527-7104. Leave message if no answer. •‘Works of Men 2.0’  at Henning Cultural Center
The Brimstone Historical Society invites you to their newest art exhibit at the Henning Cultural Center. Last year's “Works of Men” exhibit received great feedback from the community, so it has returned! 
“Works of Men 2.0” will be at the Henning Cultural Center from October 22 to November 19. The exhibit features artwork from several male artists from this area. This year's artists include Geoff Russell, Matthew Tabor, Ralph “Pie” Sonnier, Troy Broussard, Brian Prudhomme, Charlie Guidry, and Drew LaBorde.  Several different mediums will be on display, including oil paintings, photography, digital art, ironwork, wood crafting, and more.
“Works of Men 2.0” will not be on display long, so catch it while you can!
The Henning Cultural Center is located at 923 Ruth Street in Sulphur.  For information about this exhibit, please call 337-527-0357.

•Movies under the Stars
Pack a picnic and bring the kids out for a night to remember this fall as the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury presents "Movies under the Stars," at Prien Lake Park, 3700 West Prien Lake Road in Lake Charles. The series will show features Friday, October 23, October 30, November  6 and 13. Each screening will begin at 6 p.m., or whenever dusk occurs. The event is free to the public. 
The series kicks off October 23rd with, “E.T.”  This award-winning film almost didn’t get made until a young Steven Spielberg took it on and turned it into a movie that’s been charming audiences year after year. October 30th’s film will take you to a kingdom, far away where true love and rodents of unusual sizes live side by side. “The Princess Bride” lights up the screen the night before Halloween. “Casablanca”, one of the most quoted films of all time, offers a romantic night out in November. Finally, the Parish asks, “What do animals do when humans aren’t looking?” “Barnyard” answers that question in a way sure to tickle your funny bone.
Patrons are allowed to bring their own food, or they can buy tasty selections from The Landing restaurant, a participating partner with the series.
Seating is not provided, so patrons are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair.  In the event of inclement weather, the event will be canceled.  For more information, please call 721-3500.

OCTOBER 24
•Gigantic Garage Sale
On October 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Calcasieu Parish Animal Coalition-4 Paws Society, Hobo Hotel, SWLA Humane Society, and Lake Area Animal Hospital will combine their considerable forces and host a huge multi-family and vendor garage sale. Offerings will include appliances, furniture, household goods, tools, decorative items, clothing, and lots more. There will also be baked goods for sale as well as pets.
Anyone who wishes to be a part of this community event by making a donation/donations to help with this rescue cause are asked to call 337-583-9435 or 337-515-5450.

The location for this event is 465 Hardy Road in Carlyss which is south of Sulphur, LA. Take exit 20 off I-10 then take Hwy 27 south. Turn left at the third light onto Hwy. 108, then take a right onto S. Boudoin Road. Take a right onto Hardy Road. The garage sale will be at the end of the road on eight acres. An adoption application, vet references, and home visit are required for adoptions.
•VFW and AUX 8107 Canned Good Drive
VFW and Aux 8107 will be collecting canned goods and staples for local food pantries on October 24 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Hygiene products for local homeless shelters are appreciated as well. The Post home is located at 1235 E. Napoleon Street in Sulphur.
•CPSO Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host Safe & Secure: A Ladies Firearm Safety and Self-Defense Workshop on Saturday, October 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CPSO Training Academy located at 3958 Mallard Cove Dr. Free class for women 18 years of age and over. •Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk® 2009
The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Memory Walk® will take place on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles, LA. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.  Held annually in hundreds of communities around the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers and corporate and community leaders. They are on the move to end Alzheimer’s. •New Beginnings to Celebrate First Anniversary
New Beginnings at Lake Charles is celebrating their First Anniversary and is inviting everyone to their picnic on Saturday, October 24 from noon until 3 p.m. The community is invited to join them at 145 Victoria Drive in Moss Bluff (off Highway 171 North).

OCTOBER 25
•Elvis for Autism Concert
Elvis for Autism, a benefit concert for Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana (ASSL) will be held at the L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort Event Center on Sunday, October 25, at 7 p.m. John Ieyoub, nationally acclaimed tribute artist, will be the featured performer along with an all-star cast headed by Chris Flowers and the Louisiana Express. Ieyoub has performed at private and corporate functions and at casinos across the state and in Mississippi. This will be Ieyoub’s last local performance. The event will benefit the newly opened Creole House for adults with autism, a dream that has become a reality. As of June 15, clients who need care twenty-four hours a day from specially trained attendants, are living in the home. The first of its kind in Louisiana, the home is modeled after the internationally acclaimed Autism Services in Huntington, West Virginia where several ASSL board members have been trained. Tax deductible tickets are $100 each and may be purchased at any First Federal branch or by calling ASSL at 337-436-5001.Corporate sponsors will be seated at tables for eight and all others will be general admission stadium seating.
Attendees must be at least 21 years of age.

OCTOBER 29
Diabetes Support Group
The Diabetes Support Group will meet Thursday October 29, 2009 at 11:30 in the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital cafeteria conference room. The topic will be Medications and Diabetes with a pharmacist from WCCH scheduled to speak. The meeting day was changed only for this month.
•VFW Exceptional Citizens Dance

•VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for Grades 6, 7, and 8 consisting of 300 typed words entitled ”When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heros?“ One winner from each school will be sent for district judging. The deadline for entry is November 1, 2009. Please put name of student and school on reverse of entry. Voice Of Democracy Contest is open to Grades 9 through 12. Submit a good quality taped speech no longer than five minutes with a written copy of speech included. The deadline is November 1, 2009. One winner from each school sent for district Judging. NOVEMBER 2
•Contraband Chapter AACA Meeting

NOVEMBER 7
•Charlotte Landry David Benefit
Charlotte Landry David, formerly of Vinton, was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She has since undergone a bone marrow transplant at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston.
A benefit has been scheduled to assist her with medical, travel and temporary living expenses while receiving treatment in Houston. It will be held on November 7 at Niblett’s Bluff Park in Vinton from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day will consist of a motorcycle ride, live auction, children’s activities, live bands and jambalaya plate lunches. Gifts will be auctioned off on the day of the benefit.

•WCCH Hosts Seminar on Managing Diabetes
A free seminar on diabetes management sponsored by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10 at Dynamic Dimensions in Sulphur.  Featured speakers and topics for the seminar include:  Kelly Fuqua, MD, “Complications of Diabetes” and Tyson Green, DPM, “Put Your Feet First.” A cooking demonstration will also be provided by Leslie Petross, registered dietitian. A variety of vendors will be on hand to provide information, including the Home Health Agency of WCCH, the Wound Healing Center of WCCH, Hanger Prosthetics, The Eye Clinic and many others. NOVEMBER 12
•WCAC November Meeting Slated
The November meeting for West Calcasieu Association of Commerce will be held at noon on Thursday, November 12th at the Frasch Park Building Conference Room. Guest speaker will be Dr. Mike D. McDaniel, PH.D. with LSU Center for Energy Studies. The topic of his talk is "A Look at Climate Change Legislation--Cap & Trade".  He will give a climate legislation update, cover the potential impacts of Cap-and-Trade on Louisiana, circumstances favoring and impeding Climate Change Legislation, potential EPA Regulation of greenhouse gases, and the U.S. Chamber initiative. Current members and those interested in joining the WCAC are welcome to attend the catered luncheon. Cost is $10 per person. •Westlake Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Celebration slated
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., American Legion Post 407 and the West Cal Kiwanis Club will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving celebration for all area senior citizens. The event will be at the American Legion Post 407 home on 912 John Stine Road. There will be dancing, door prizes, and wonderful food, plus music by Earl LaPointe. •VFW Americanism Contest
Sulphur VFW Post 8107 and Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the annual VFW Americanism Contest. All students in the public, private and homebound sectors in Sulphur, Carlyss, Westlake, Hackberry, and Johnson Bayou may enter through November 15, 2009. The Americanism Contest consists of the following categories and age groups: Kindergarten - Coloring of American Flag furnished by Post; Grades 1 and 2 - Drawing and coloring of American Flag, pay attention to stripe colors; Grades 3 and 4 - Drawing of a Historical Event (not a ship or plane); Grades 5 and 6 - Essay 300 to 400 words titled “ How  I Show My Patriotism On Memorial Day.” Please put name and school on reverse of entry. •Pumpkin Patch
The church grounds of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will once again be covered with big orange pumpkins grown in and around the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. The Pumpkin Patch makes a wonderland for the children to explore, see, smell and touch. School classes, daycare facilities and grandparents bring children to Pumpkin Patch Storytime. It is conducted by a former kindergarten teacher wearing a costume. There will be two classes on 10 different days. The Storytime is a gift to the children of the area from the church. Call the church office (625-4288) to schedule a visit. Picnics can be held in the Pavilion if arrangements are made beforehand. Those with a sweet tooth can purchase delicious pumpkin bread made by members of the church. Everyone is welcome at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Pumpkin Patch at 1700 Maplewood Drive in Sulphur. The Pumpkin Patch will continue through Halloween.
