Community Thanksgiving

This photo from a previous Community Thanksgiving in Sulphur at SPAR brought young and old together as family to share a meal. Over 1,200 meals are served  and between 60 and 80 turkeys are deep-fried for the event.

Three Event Highlights

1. The Community Thanksgiving Dinner began in 1985 and, for most of the years since, it had been held at the Maplewood-Hollywood Lions Club on Maplewood Drive. About seven years ago the event was moved to Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center (SPAR) as the dinner has now grown too large for the former space with over 1,000 meals served for the last several years.

2. This year, guests are invited to arrive at about 10 a.m. with a prayer service set for 10:15 a.m. Volunteers will begin serving food at 10:30 a.m. The annual Bingo is set to kick off at noon and run until 2 p.m.

3. The meal includes fried turkey, ham, rice dressing, cornbread dressing, green beans, corn and a dessert. Various civic organizations, churches and schools contribute the food, and donations come from the community.

Anyone wanting to help with preparing or serving the meal is asked to be at SPAR around 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Those wishing to donate a dessert may bring it to the event and monetary donations are accepted as well. For more information, call the Lions Club at 337-625-2516.
