A Better Block

The first Better Blocks demonstration was held in April of 2017 in Lake Charles on Lakeshore Drive. Parking, driving, biking, and pedestrian lanes all had designated areas of travel and local businesses were encouraged to open their doors for the special day.

Three Event Highlights

1. There will be a Better Block demonstration on Saturday, April 7, in downtown Sulphur from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Severeal blocks of S. Huntington Street will be used to illustrate a “Complete Streets” demonstration and the need for street design for all kinds of transportation and all users from 8 years old to 80. The event was scheduled for February but was rained out.

2. This one-day demonstration project will transform S. Huntington Street from Cypress Street to Verdine Street into a more pedestrian-friendly destination, including parking, crosswalks, shopping, artwork, and pop-up vendors. The goal is to educate the public to know exactly what infrastructure improvements could mean to the area.

3. Better Blocks — Sulphur will be open to the public to experience and give their feedback. Along with the pop-up educational and entertainment, local businesses are encouraged to open their doors, have sidewalk sales and enjoy the day. This demonstration is sponsored by The SWLA Economic Development Alliance Quality of Life Task Force, with help from the City of Sulphur, the Brimstone Museum, IMCAL and Healthier SWLA.
