Senior Center Daigle

Sulphur Public Works Director, Mike Daigle, Public Works Superintendent Randy Chiasson, and Public Works Supervisor Randy Chiasson, stopped by the Sulphur Senior Center Wednesday to give seniors an overview of what the department does, how to contact the right department to address problems, and to answer questions.

“We are in a prosperity period,” said Sulphur Public Works Director Mike Daigle on Wednesday. “The past couple of years have really been prosperous for the City, so we’ve bought a lot of equipment, so we can better serve the public.”

Daigle, along with Public Works Superintendent Randy Chiasson, and Public Works Supervisor Derek Romero stopped by the Sulphur Senior Center Wednesday to give seniors an overview of what the department does, how to contact the right department to address problems, and to answer questions.

Daigle said the prosperity is brought on by recent growth in Sulphur and the surrounding areas.

Daigle said Chiasson and Romero manage a staff of 42 employees. “They’re the guys who really get the job done,” he said. “That’s 42 people who are out every day cleaning sewer lines, digging ditches, replacing broken sidewalks, and fixing potholes.

“I rely on them greatly to make sure that the citizens are satisfied with the work that’s being done.”

Daigle provided seniors with a phone directory to address any public works needs they may have. He also directed them to the City’s website, www.sulphur.org, which allows residents to report water leaks, limbs, and trash complaints. He said those without a computer or not familiar with the internet can make use of the Center’s computers with assistance from center director Jena Cruz. Daigle also gave a brief explanation of the recent change in the City’s garbage collection contract. Prior to the recent change, the City had a contract with Progressive, which was bought out by Waste Connections.

Progressive had assets in Lafayette and struck a deal with Republic to exchange service territories. Republic Services began its contract with the City for solid waste collection, on September 11.

The schedule for solid waste collection has not changed. “We had hoped the transition would be unnoticeable,” said Daigle. “But, unfortunately, it was noticeable. A lot of people did not get their cans picked up.”

Daigle said the territory swap led to the resignation of some drivers and Republic also inherited trucks with service issues. A driver shortage led to Republic having to bring in drivers from Lafayette. “There were some challenges in the initial transition, but we hope a lot of this has been solved,” said Daigle.

Sulphur public works employees are on call 24-hours a day, seven days a week. To report problems with water or sewage after business hours or on weekends, they can be reached by calling the Sulphur Police Department at 5274550. The SPD will relay the information to the public works employees on call.

“We can’t solve everybody’s problems,” said Daigle. “But we certainly can try.”

After their presentation, the city employees addressed individual complaints and questions.
