The streak continues for the Lutcher Bulldogs and the St. Louis Lady Saints as they both repeated as team champions at the LHSAA Division III swimming championships on Thursday at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center.
It was the third consecutive title for the Lady Saints and the fourth in a row for the Bulldogs who have won 10 state team titles over all.
For the second day in a row the 2007 champions prevailed at the LHSAA swimming championships as the Lutcher Bulldogs and the St. Louis Catholic Lady Saints took home state team titles at the Division III championships on Thursday at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center.
Lutcher scored 428 points while Parkview Baptist finished as the boy's runner up with 282 points. St. Louis captured this year's girls' title with 397 points to Parkview Baptist's 315 points.
"We are not always the biggest but we know how to swim," Lutcher head coach Lanny Remondet said. "We do not always have that swimmers build but we know how to put it together and finish.
"It was a great team effort. We have done just as good as in the past but I think that the other teams, the second and third place teams are getting stronger. It makes it tougher to win but I think that we swam as good as we possibly could."
The Bulldogs controlled the relays again this year as they placed first in the 200 yard and 400 yard freestyles and third in the 200-yard medley relay.
"It is always the relays," Remondet said. "Our relays always come in strong.
"It is always a close race. There is always something that finishes with in a tenth of a second or a hundredth of a second."
One of those close relays was in the final event of the day, the boys' 400 yard freestyl,e where the Bulldogs team of Kolby Louque, Blake Roussel, Dustin Roper and Hunter Louque were able to hold off Parkview Baptist's team of John Michael Moore, Clint Dodge, Clay Devlin and Danion Miles by just a half second, 3:34.55 to 3:35.21.
The Bulldogs also got strong individual performances out of Hunter Louque and Kolby Louque. Between the two of them, they combined for two first placed finishes, a second and a third place finish.
"We had Kolby and Hunter Louque that our some of our stronger swimmers taking first and seconds and it is hard to cover that when you can get that many firsts," Remondet said.
After losing seven seniors from last year's state championship team and eight more from this year's, Remondet feels that the Bulldogs could be looking at number 11 next year.
"Next year if we win it again it is kind of a dynasty," Remondet said. "Losing that many boys in two years, if we can do it again I think that it will be something special."
The Lady Saints got a quick boost to start their hunt for their third title in the first event of the day when Anne Claire Babineaux, Jordan Churchman, Sarah Lorio and Kristen Hinton took first in the 200-yard medley relay.
St. Louis led by just 41 points with two races to go and picked up 58 points in the 100-yard breaststroke to increase their lead.
"I think that this was the best year for a repeat," St. Louis head coach Ken Kolde said. "We have the strongest team that we have had in three years. We are still very strong in the breaststroke.
"We pulled 58 points in the breaststroke and that put us over the top."
A big part of the Lady Saints three-peat this year was seniors Kayla Wilburn, Jordan Churchman and Kristen Hinton who have been part of all three state championships.
"We won the medley relay this year," Kolde said. "We also broke our own best time in the 400 freestyle relay by almost eight seconds.
"It was a phenomenal meet. We are going to miss them so much because the three of them, Kayla Wilburn, Jordan Churchman and Kristen Hinton, pulled in over 100 individual points between them. These three have been part of all three state championships."
For the Parkview Baptist Eagles, it was their highest finish ever at the state swimming championships after finishing third last year behind Lutcher and St. Charles Catholic. The Lady Eagles also improved to second place this year after a third place finished in 2007.
"It is the first time that the boys have finished in the top two," Parkview Baptist head coach Nan Fontenot said. "It was a great team effort for both teams to do that.
"They really had to step up."
After a night of several near misses at new Division III records, Parkview's Laura Soileau was able to set a new record in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.88 barely eclipsing Sacred Heart's Kendall Fosters record of 1:08.00 set in 1998. Soileau’s time during the morning preliminaries was better than her finals time when she swam a when she swam a 1:07.72 to set the new record. Soileau also picked up an individual state title in the 200-yard individual medley.
Nearly setting state records was E.D. White's Michelle Gaubert in the 50-yard freestyle and Redemptorist’s Jarod Brown in the 200-yard freestyle. Gaubert missed the record by three tenths of a second with a time of 25.77 seconds and Brown was short by just two tenths of a second with a 1:49.75 in the 200.
Parkview's John Michael Moore picked up first place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly.
The Jennings High School boys' swim team placed fifth in the team standings with 144.5 points.
Jennings' Avery Capdeville took second in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.48 seconds just out of first place by four tenths of a second to Lutcher's Kolby Louque's time of 23.06 seconds. He also picked up a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
The LHSAA swimming championships continue today with Division II followed by Division I on Saturday.
