The Lady Tors just couldn’t get a shot to fall in a game where Sulphur played excellent defense in a 26-19 loss to New Iberia in game two of the Jennings Tournament on Wednesday.
“We knew it was going to take a major effort on the defensive end to stay with them,” Sulphur head coach Helen Lefevre. “We can’t ask for more than what our kids did on defense. We held a good team to 26 points.
“We did out-rebound them. I thought we out-hustled them, and I thought we out-played them in every way but hitting the outside shots.”
Chenequa Ceasar led Sulphur on defense with three steals and nine defensive rebounds. Ceasar and Allison McReynolds led the Lady Tors with six points each.
Ceasar struck first to put the Lady Tors ahead and Callie Wyatt added another score for Sulphur to take a 4-0 lead in the first.
But New Iberia scored five points to end the first period to take the 5-4 advantage.
Sulphur was down 7-4 early in the second but went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
NISH again ended a period with a five-point run to take a 12-9 lead at the half.
The Lady Tors held the Lady Yellow Jackets to their lowest point total in a quarter in the third with three, but the shots wouldn’t fall for Sulphur as the Lady Tors were down by three going into the fourth quarter by a score of 16-13.
“We shot less than 20-percent tonight,” Lefevre said. “That makes it hard to beat anybody. We shoot 30-percent and we win this ball game. But that’s a correctable thing. We just couldn’t hit them tonight and Saturday we might hit them like crazy, you just never know.”
The Lady Yellow Jackets followed their four-point third quarter with a ten point fourth to seal the 26-19 win.
Wyatt finished the game with five points and Kristin Louviere had two for Sulphur.
NISH was led by Kaysean Clavelle and Shalicia Rochan with eight points apiece for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
The Lady Tors will play for third place on Saturday at 2:30 against the loser of the Barbe/Eunice game played later Wednesday night.
Late Tuesday
Lady Tors 43,
Church Point 27
The Lady Tors opened the season with a 43-27 win over Church Point in the first game for Sulphur in the Jennings Tournament Tuesday.
Chenequa Ceasar and Allison McReynolds led Sulphur with eight points each in the game. Celola Mayo and Callie Wyatt added seven each in the win.
“Church Point was very athletic, so we had to play hard,” said Sulphur head coach Helen Lafevre. “We played good defense and that’s going to be the key for us this season. When the shots start falling, we are going to be hard to beat.”
