The Sulphur Tors will host their second tournament of the season today when they start play in the Cameron State Bank Classic.
Also playing in the tournament will be Sam Houston, Westlake, DeRidder and Airline High School out of Bossier City.
The Tors have already faced three of the four teams in the tournament.
Sulphur owns two one-run win over 2009 Class 4A runner-up Sam Houston (6-8) and a 6-2 win over DeRidder (1-14). The Tors split two games against Airline (7-5) in the 2010 Vikings Classic last week.
But just because they have already faced some of the teams in the tournament does not mean the Tors can let their guard down.
“Obviously we have to be at the top of our game with all of them,” Tor baseball head coach Ron Riley said. “I tell our guys every day that it is not about who we play but how we play.
“We are still looking to get better at each phase of the game.”
The only team the Tors have not yet played this season is Westlake (4-8-1).
Riley hopes the Tors pitching will continue to keep the Tors in striking distance.
“If our starting pitchers continue to do the job that they have done, it is allows us to stay in the game,” Riley said.
The Tors will need to improve their hitting with runners in scoring position.
“Defense is a big key but we have to get better offensively at being able to score runs when we have the opportunities,” Riley said. “The first four innings (against Iowa on Tuesday) we get the lead off guy on and we can’t drive him in.
“The one inning we scored the two runs we get a lead off singe, an infield hit and a double. But we still had a runner at second with no outs and we don't score another run. As far as an Achilles heal that is ours. We are not taking advantage of the opportunities that teams are giving us.”
